Fremantle v Hawthorn

No new major injury concerns although Daniel Howe went off late with a shoulder concern.

Melbourne v Geelong

Steven May (AF $556k SC $443k DEF) suffered a nasty eye injury. Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin said: “He’s gone to hospital. It’s more getting some stuff around his eye, checked out. We’ll wait and see but clearly he’s going to miss a few weeks, that’s disappointing.”

Brandan Parfitt (AF $643k SC $446k MID) was a late withdrawal with a hip injury. Geelong coach Chris Scott said about his Round 5 availability: “I think so. The fast decision we needed to make was can he or can’t he today. The slow decision is the next few days, assessing that. Unsure.”

Scott also offered an update on Jeremy Cameron‘s (AF $488k SC $388k FWD) hamstring injury. He said: “I hope next week. I said during the week we’ll make a cautious well-considered decision with him. We’re still in that frame of mind.”

North Melbourne v Adelaide

Luke McDonald (AF $692k SC $512k DEF) was subbed off with a pectoral muscle injury, while Cam Zurhaar was concussed. North coach David Noble: “I’m not sure about Luke’s. Pecs are never great from that side. We probably won’t know the severity until we get a scan. It’s a bit of an unusual one & sometimes they can be a bit nasty.”

Adelaide had no new injuries, although coach Matthew Nicks update on Rory Sloane (AF $620k SC $507k MID). Nicks said: “He’s going well. Fingers crossed the surgery goes well for him. We’re going to be conservative with that. It could be anything from 2-4 weeks.”

Collingwood v GWS Giants

Taylor Adams (AF $796k SC $536k MID) was the injury concern with an MCL injury. Pies coach Nathan Buckley said: “The doc thought it was significant enough to obviously not go back out. We’ll see how that settles over the next day or two.”

Brayden Sier (AF $386k SC $305k MID) was subbed off a bit earlier than Adams’ injury. Buckley said: “Brayden Sier had gastro and was deemed by the docs that he wasn’t able to continue. He was crook for most of the game and couldn’t go any further.”

Callan Ward (AF $479k SC $409k MID) was troubled by a wrist/hand injury early on but played on. Giants coach Leon Cameron said: “Hopefully his hand is OK. I think it’s OK, he clearly came back on. We’ll work out that in the wash-up in the next 24 hours.”

Cameron also spoke about the potential return of Matthew Flynn (AF $346k SC $227k RUCK) with Shane Mumford used against the Pies. Cameron said: “We’re rapt with Matty Flynn and Kieran Briggs…. Flynny needed a spell. He’d played a run of three games. Does (Mumford) play next week and have a spell? Clearly he can’t do what he used to do. It’s a fine line. I can’t expect him to play 3-4 games in a row.”

Gold Coast v Carlton

Sean Lemmens (AF $399k SC $269k FWD) was concussed. Jack Silvagni (AF $399k SC $257k FWD) injured his shoulder again and was subbed off late. Carlton coach David Teague: “In terms of how it is, I actually don’t know yet. Last time he missed a week … it’s probably something like that but I don’t know yet.”

St Kilda v West Coast

Rowan Marshall (AF $738k SC $557k FWD/RUCK) went off in the second quarter but returned in his first game back from injury. St Kilda coach Brett Ratten said: “He’s OK. He just felt a bit of a twist. With the foot, he was probably concerned. We went down & checked that but he was fine.”

Ratten also provided an update on Paddy Ryder‘s (SF $575k SC $505k RUCK) return to action after taking leave. He said: “We’ve got to do some extra work with him but he’s traveling OK. They were fairly surprised by how well he was going… We’ll leave that as late as possible.”

West Coast lost Shannon Hurn (AF $696k SC $505k DEF) to injury early. West Coast coach Adam Simpson said: “He’s done a little calf. A little soleus. We’ll get a scan. Soleuses aren’t terrible but they’ll probably rule you out for a week or two.”

On Hurn’s likely replacement, Simpson flagged Alex Witherden (AF $654k SC $456k DEF) as “an option for us”.

Western Bulldogs v Brisbane Lions

There were no new injury worries, although Lions coach Chris Fagan noted Dan McStay (AF $396k SC $333k FWD) will likely be available next round after a knee injury, which may impact Tom Fullarton‘s (AF $197k SC $149k R/F) selection.

Caleb Daniel (AF $693k SC $523k DEF) was later offered a one-game suspension by the AFL’s MRO for rough conduct.

Port Adelaide v Richmond

Zak Butters (AF $618k SC $488k FWD) suffered an ankle/knee injury which saw him eventually subbed out. Port coach Ken Hinkley said: “We’ll scan him and see how he is. There was a bit of knee and ankle. When we get the information you’ll know straight away.”

Xavier Duursma (AF $550k SC $383k MID) injured his knee late in the game. Hinkley said: “Without being too optimistic, we’re positive might not be the worst case with a knee injury and we all know what that is, an ACL. It doesn’t mean it’s not, but at this stage, there’s some optimism around that.”

Port put out an update on Saturday, which read: “Duursma is set to spend a period on the sidelines after scans confirmed a knee ligament injury. Duursma suffered a significant hyperextension of his right knee which forced him off during the last quarter of Port’s win over Richmond on Friday night.

“The 20-year-old will undergo surgery on the lateral ligament in the next few days and a timeframe for his return to playing will become clearer in coming weeks.

“Fellow midfielder Zak Butters will seek further medical advice around the management of an ankle injury which saw him subbed off in the same game. An MRI has shown an ankle syndesmosis injury. The club will provide an update on his treatment when it becomes available.”

Sydney v Essendon

Isaac Heeney (AF $594k SC $468k FWD) was subbed out with a hand injury. Sydney coach John Longmire said: “He’s got a crack in his hand, so it’s three 3 or 4 weeks, I guess. But I’m not sure what the official diagnosis is.”

Longmire also updated on Lance Franklin (AF $376k SC $312k FWD) when he said: “There’s a few things that went against him to this point, as far as playing every week. We’ll take it as we see it. There’s no roll-out plan. We’ll see how he goes.”

He also provided an update on James Rowbottom (AF $547k SC $405k MID) whose return from a knee injury may impact some of their rookies. Longmire said: “I hope he is. He’s a real chance. He wanted to push this week. It’d be good to have Roey available if he’s OK.”
