R2 Rolling Injury Report: Fyfe concussed, Walters to return, Caldwell hurt
Stay up to date throughout the round with our rolling injury report from the coaches post-game. With the round extending from Thursday through until Sunday night, these snippets of info will be key.
Fremantle v GWS Giants
Nat Fyfe (AF $700k SC $608k MID) was concussed late in the third quarter and will miss Round 3. Freod coach Justin Longmuir said: “He got concussed and we subbed him out. He’s good in the change rooms now, he’s up and about.
“We tread carefully with all concussions, and he won’t be passed fit to play before he ticks every box with our doctors. That’s the same with every player.
The Dockers should get Michael Walters (AF $698k SC $531k M/F) back from a hamstring next round. Longmuir said: “He’s ticked most boxes. The way I saw him running out here yesterday afternoon, I don’t want to declare him fit, I’ll let the medical staff do that, but he doesn’t have to do a lot I wouldn’t have though, except get through main training.”
GWS coach Leon Cameron mentioned Jake Riccardi (AF $479k SC $336k FWD) and Jesse Hogan (AF $459k SC $310k FWD).
Cameron said: “Riccardi was a little unexpected. He played maybe three quarters on the weekend with his ankle, we thought he’d be a bit longer, but he actually got through. It depends how he’s pulled up.”
Cameron added: “Hogan’s more unlikely than likely. It would be wrong for us to rush him in. He probably needs either a full week of training or a week playing at the lower level.”
Western Bulldogs v West Coast
No injury concerns.
Hawthorn v Richmond
Will Day (AF $575k SC $384k DEF) injured his ankle and was subbed off. Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson: “I haven’t checked with the docs just yet. They assessed him to be serious enough to come out of the game. It’s an ankle. We don’t know if it’ll be zero weeks or 6. We’ll get that scanned.”
Denver Grainger-Barras (AF $260k SC $184k DEF) was also injured in the VFL with fears of an ACL but Clarkson downplayed that. He said: “He’s got a bit of a knee (in the VFL). We’ll get that scanned. They think structurally it’s sound. I think he landed awkwardly & hyperextended it.”
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said Nick Vlastuin (AF $560k SC $483k DEF) will play next round after injury.
On Bachar Houli‘s (AF $764k SC $465k DEF) calf issue, Hardwick said: “He’ll push for this week. The way the game is played is going to suit a player of his capability. As much as I thought it’d be good to get a game in the VFL, it’s going to be hard to leave him out.”
Gold Coast v North Melbourne
Connor Budarick (AF $355k SC $256k DEF) went down with a suspected ACL injury, while Sam Day (AF $369k SC $298k FWD) was subbed out with a left knee problem.
Suns coach Stuart Dew said: “We feel for him (Budarick) because he’s obviously disappointed and we think that might be on the more severe side. We love Connor. He’s come into the footy club and played from day one. Sam will be a little bit more wait and see.”
Jack Mahony (AF $347k SC $271k FWD) was subbed off with an ankle issue. North coach David Noble said: “Not sure, bad enough they didn’t want him to come back on.”
On Ben Cunnington (AF $503k SC $439k MID), Noble added: “We’ve got a few coming back. Cunnington will be right next week. He’ll be ready for Good Friday.”
St Kilda v Melbourne
Jimmy Webster (AF $320k SC $274k DEF) was subbed off. St Kilda coach Brett Ratten said: “He copped a knock in the head, we suspect a crack in the jaw. He had a concussion test, not sure if he failed that. The doc was worried about the crack so we took him off.”
Ratten offered updates on ruck duo Paddy Ryder (SF $575k SC $505k RUCK) and Rowan Marshall (AF $738k SC $557k RUCK/FWD), which will impact Paul Hunter (AF $184k SC $102k RUCK).
“We’ll have a look at where Paddy is and his scenario (for R3),” Ratten said. On Marshall, he added: “I wouldn’t say a month off. He ran pretty well this morning. He might be two weeks away.”
Port Adelaide v Essendon
Port coach Ken Hinkley said Connor Rozee (AF $518k SC $377k FWD) would return from foot surgery next round. Hinkley said: “Connor Rozee is a lock (to play next weekend). Unless something goes wrong. It would take a brave coach not to pick him.”
Mitch Georgiades (AF $399k SC $317k FWD) was a late inclusion for Todd Marshall (AF $473k SC $377k FWD) who had a back issue.
Essendon had a few injuries with Jye Caldwell (AF $526k SC $348k MID/FWD) suffering a hamstring issue, Dylan Shiel (AF $765k SC $548k MID) hurting his knee and Sam Draper (AF $466k SC $378k RUCK) twisting his ankle.
Bombers coach Ben Rutten: “Jye is just a hamstring. Dylan is a knee and Draper is kind of a high ankle. The doctors don’t think (Shiel’s injury is) an ACL. It’s just locked up a little bit, so he’ll have some scans and work out exactly what it is … but (it didn’t look) great.
“(Draper has) one of those high ankle (injuries) we think at the moment but we’ll have to investigate a bit further.”
Dyson Heppell (AF $572k SC $319k MID) was a late withdrawal. Rutten said: “Dyson was going okay, Thursday he just had a bit of a back spasm. We don’t think it’s anything too serious, but it was enough to keep him out of this week. We’re hopeful he’ll be available next week.
“But certainly we’ll test our depth now. As disappointing as it is to lose those three guys it creates an opportunity now to have a look at other players.”
Sydney v Adelaide
No injury concerns.
Geelong v Brisbane Lions
Gary Rohan (AF $440k SC $392k FWD) was offered a two-game ban for an off-the-ball strike on Lachie Neale.
Geelong coach Chris Scott offered updates on Jeremy Cameron (AF $488k SC $388k FWD) and Mitch Duncan (AF $809k SC $556k MID).
On Cameron, Scott said: “We’re probably thinking he’s another couple of games away… He’s not playing Easter Monday.”
On Duncan, Scott said: “The plan is for him to play a half (in the VFL). He’s capable of playing more minutes but it’s always a balance… We think that’s the right balance to have him available for Easter Monday.”
Oscar McInerney (AF $552k SC $443k RUCK) was subbed off with an ankle injury he carried for most of the game. Lions coach Chris Fagan said: “He was very injured early. It was a courageous effort. We made the decision early in the last qtr. He couldn’t run anymore… He rolled his ankle, not sure if there’s ligament damage.”
Carlton v Collingwood
Jamie Elliott (AF $536k SC $362k FWD) was the only injury concern, substituted out in the second term an ankle problem.
Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said: “We don’t know. We’ll wait til we see the scan. Clearly he was unable to finish the game so that’s not a great sign.”
