Mitch Owen is expected to be fine to play in the Hobart Hurricanes’ season opener in a fortnight’s time having suffered a minor hamstring strain last week.
Owen was substituted out of Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield game against NSW on Saturday 22 November after bowling 4 overs on the first day.
The all-rounder is understood to have sustained a hamstring strain, which was described as “very light”.
Honeyball understands the decision to substitute him out of the game was more precautionary with a view to his BBL availability.
Hobart’s first game in BBL|15 is on Tuesday 16 December against the Sydney Thunder in just over 2 weeks’ time.
It’s unclear if Owen’s hamstring concern will impact his ability to bowl but he’s expected to be available to play, likely continuing his opening batting role.
Owen was a breakout star in BBL|14, topping the tournament for runs with 452 from 11 knocks, including 2 centuries. His power hitting led the Hurricanes to their maiden title.
He continued his rise in 2025 with an Australia debut, having won the USA’s Major League Cricket Player of the Tournament.
As a result, he’s one of the highest owned players going into SuperCoach BBL|15 despite his price tag of $192k.
