Stay up to date throughout Round 9 with our rolling injury report from the coaches post-game. With the nine-game round extending from Thursday night through until Sunday night, these snippets of info will be key.
Fremantle vs Collingwood
Freo subbed out injury-prone ruckman Sean Darcy after an old knee problem flared up again.
Dockers coach Justin Longmuir said: “We’ll work that out, see how he pulls up tomorrow. I don’t think it’s significant. They called it a jarred knee in a kick. He was sore, so it was an opportunity to sub him out. We needed to go a bit smaller. And once he was sore, it was a good opportunity to pull that lever.”
Lachie Schultz suffered concussion. Nick Daicos was treated for left hip soreness and a reported pectoral issue but played the game out.
St Kilda vs Carlton
Carlton copped some injury toll, with Mitch McGovern subbed out early following a heavy collision.
Lachlan Cowan tweaked his hamstring, Blake Acres hurt his shoulder, Nick Haynes was left with a bloodied head and Jack Silvagni played through a groin concern.
Blues coach Michael Voss said: “Cowan will have his hamstring assessed. He was a bit tight, [so] we just didn’t want to send him back out there. Gov, will wait for the assessment [on the] chest area. I’ll just call it [the] chest area, I couldn’t give medical terminology right now.
“Obviously Blake had the shoulder he was managing, and Nick got a sort of kick to the back of his neck that he had to get assessed.”
The Saints subbed out Jack Higgins who had experienced illness.
Melbourne vs Hawthorn
Hawks coach Sam Mitchell revealed Jarman Impey will miss their trip to NT for family reasons and Tom Barrass will return.
Mitchell explained the decision to sub Henry Hustwaite was about curtailing Christian Petracca, moving Finn Maginness on to him around the ball and injecting Bailey MacDonald’s run.
He explained: “We decided to go with Weddle (forward). That brought Bailey MacDonald into the game. It brought Dylan Moore and Finn Maginness around the ball. We thought taking Huss out, he’s young, hasn’t played a lot of footy, had a bit of continuity at AFL level at this stage. To get a bit of speed and energy into the game, we thought it was the right move.”
Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin confirmed Jack Viney will miss next week’s game too, having reported delayed concussion symptoms on Thursday from their Round 8 game against West Coast.
Goodwin revealed Clayton Oliver was used as a tagger due to Viney’s absence and when asked if they’d do it again, he said: “It’s certainly something we’ll look at.”
Essendon vs Sydney
The Dons subbed out debutant Lewis Hayes, having hurt his knee. Nick Blakey undertook a head injury assessment late on, after a hit from Zach Merrett, who was cleared by the MRO.
Essendon since confirmed Hayes has suffered a season-ending ACL injury.
Gold Coast vs Western Bulldogs
Laitham Vandermeer was subbed out with a calf injury. Dogs coach Luke Beveridge was hopeful it was “nothing serious”.
Port Adelaide vs Adelaide
Neither side suffered any new injuries.
Richmond vs West Coast
Archer Reid was subbed out late with an apparent shoulder issue but Eagles coach Andrew McQualter said they got through unscathed.
McQualter added he expects Jeremy McGovern (concussion) and Oscar Allen (knee) to be available next round.
Jayden Short was a late out with a knee issue but Richmond coach Adem Yze wasn’t asked about the extent of the injury.
Geelong vs GWS Giants
GWS subbed out Jake Stringer with a hamstring injury. Toby Greene battled through after a twisted ankle.
GWS coach Adam Kingsley said: “Unfortunately, Jake did his hamstring… looks like he might be out for a short period of time.”
On Greene, Kingsley added: “I think he’s fine.”
Tom Stewart missed the game with an ongoing knee issue. Cats coach Chris Scott said: “I think Stewart plays (next round).”
North Melbourne vs Brisbane Lions
Caleb Daniel needed treatment on his nose but returned. North coach Alastair Clarkson wasn’t asked directly about Daniel’s status. Brisbane subbed out Jarrod Berry due to concussion.
