Stay up to date throughout Round 7 with our rolling injury report from the coaches post-game. With the nine-game round extending from Thursday night through until Sunday, these snippets of info will be key.
Melbourne vs Richmond
Neither side picked up any injuries. Dees coach Simon Goodwin praised ruckman Max Gawn for his game. He said: “He’s got enormous pride in his game. You’re seeing one of the best ever in the game go about his craft. What we’ve seen in the last few weeks, he’s reminding everyone that there’s that little bit more left in him.”
Collingwood vs Essendon
The Pies subbed out Dan McStay with a knee concern, with fears of an ACL injury. On Saturday morning, Magpies footy manager Charlie Gardiner said: “Unfortunately, scans confirmed this morning that Dan has sustained a moderate grade MCL injury during yesterday’s Anzac Day match against Essendon.
“The injury is expected to see him out of the game for the next six to eight weeks.”
Essendon coach Brad Scott explained the injury concern to Dylan Shiel which saw him benched late. He said: “Shiel just cramped late in the game. We had enough.
“We’d made our sub, so we had enough fresh players. that was purely just a fatigue him, we left him off.”
Scott said Harrison Jones rolled his ankle and was subbed out.
Fremantle vs Adelaide
Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks revealed Riley Thilthorpe played through a suspected compound fracture to a finger in his left hand. He said: “We’ll just have to see to what extent that is. He managed to go off and get back on the ground and still impact.
“So hopefully it’s not a long-term miss for him. He’s very important to us at the moment, as you saw tonight. So it was nice to see him come back out, but we’ll know more as that settles down.”
Nicks was bullish about forward Darcy Fogarty returning next week from a shoulder injury. Freo coach Justin Longmuir was similarly optimistic about Luke Jackson’s (hamstring) availability next week.
St Kilda vs Brisbane Lions
Mason Wood exited the game due to concussion, while Brisbane lost Kai Lohmann due to a shoulder injury. Jack Payne was a late out with illness.
Saints coach Ross Lyon hinted Mattaes Phillipou could be brought back in next week after injury. He said: “Hopefully there were some good performances in the seconds. You know, hopefully (Hugh) Boxshall, (Tobie) Travaglia, (Alix) Tauru’s coming, Phillipou’s available next week, he trains that intensely, I don’t know, probably an opportunity to bring him in.”
Port Adelaide vs North Melbourne
Josh Sinn was subbed out with concussion, with Paul Curtis offered a three-game ban for a dangerous tackle by the MRO.
GWS Giants vs Western Bulldogs
The Dogs subbed out Marcus Bontempelli although it appeared to only be management after his calf injury lay-off. Dogs coach Luke Beveridge wasn’t asked specifically about that.
Gold Coast vs Sydney
Sydney subbed out Ben Paton with a calf injury. Swans coach Dean Cox said: “It’s a tight calf. That’s all we know at the moment. He just couldn’t run at full speed, so we had to make the decision.” Isaac Heeney copped a cork in the fourth quarter.
Carlton vs Geelong
Tom Stewart got through the game but seemed hindered by a knee concern. Geelong coach Chris Scott said: “It was a contact thing. It sounded like a kneecap. Structurally okay, but bloody sore.
“He was limited but I think you know us well enough to know that gun players, we’re not putting them out there if we thought we were going to put next week at risk. He was limited, good effort to keep punching on.”
Scott also said it was “my understanding” that Gryan Miers, pending passing concussion protocols, can play next round despite being 12 days since the original incident. He also said Jack Henry was “close” to returning from injury next week.
Carlton coach Michael Voss said Zac Williams will need scans on his calf injury. He said: “I spoke to him in the rooms afterwards. Hopefully we’re missing him just for a couple of weeks, but I don’t know the scale of it yet, so I guess it’s a bit of a wait and see. He’s a pretty important player to our make-up of our forward line.”
Hawthorn vs West Coast
Hawthorn youngster Henry Hustwaite earned praise from coach Sam Mitchell for his display. He said: “We saw Henry Hustwaite come in today and do a really good job. I was rapt for him. He really deserved his opportunity, he got it and he took it.”
Mitchell confirmed the Hawks lost Karl Amon and Jack Scrimshaw to concussions and will miss next week.
Eagles coach Andrew McQualter said he expects Tim Kelly to be available next round after a toe injury.
