Aaron Hardie looks set to miss the Perth Scorchers’ Round 2 double due to injury, while they remain hopeful on Josh Inglis’ availability.
Hardie missed Perth’s Sunday game with a quad injury, allowing Cooper Connolly to bat first drop and bowl a few overs.
Scorchers coach Adam Voges provided an update on Hardie. He said: “Aaron is still working through his quad complaint. He’s been training with us.
“We’re certainly hopeful we’ll see him sooner rather than later. He probably doesn’t come on this road trip with us. We’ll see how we go through these next couple of days.”
Inglis was also unavailable for game one, not released from the Test squad despite missing the XI.
Voges said: “We’ll ask the question again when we get the chance. Obviously the Aussie boys are over east and our next 2 games are in Hobart and Melbourne prior to Boxing Day so we’ll find out.”
He added: “Aaron Hardie will want 3 (batting spot) back when he comes. I reckon Josh will be putting his hand up to bat as high as he can as well. We’ll get more out of our imports as the tournament progresses.”
Voges was also full of praise for Cooper Connolly, discussing his batting role. He said: “It’s team balance with a couple of the guys we’ve got out at the moment. Equally we’ve always said Coop can bat anywhere in our top 7.
“We’re really open to exploring all the different options. He’s added another string to his bow. We know he can play that finishing role. It’s great to see him play really well at 3 tonight.”
Voges hailed Jhye Richardson who shook off injury worries to claim a 3fa. He said: “Execution wise I thought Jhye was outstanding. He bowled the tough overs; in the power play, surge and back-end.
“Came on and took some important wickets. In partnership with Jason Behrendorff, that was a brilliant power play to start the day. Jhye is a really important player for us. Hopefully he can string some games together.”
Richardson also spoke after the game and revealed the shoulder injury isn’t something on his mind when bowling, offering hope he won’t need to be rested or rotated.
He said: “Not particularly, not with bowling. I’ve worked really hard over the last few years to get it into a place where it’s manageable.
“Bowling is no issue, I don’t feel it bowling. Like we saw the other week in the Shield game, I came out and bowled 30 overs after that.”
Stars captain Marcus Stoinis spoke post-game, offering an update on Glenn Maxwell’s availability ahead of their second game of the Round 1 double against Brisbane on Wednesday.
He said: “I’m not sure. We’ll probably get an update tomorrow (Monday). But at the moment it’s day by day. It depends how it’s going each day, hopefully it’s getting better and better. He’s had a hit, he’s done some running, we’ll find out more tomorrow.”
The Stars also put out an update on Hilton Cartwright after a scary incident in the field on Sunday. The update said: “Cartwright has been cleared of any serious damage to his neck whilst fielding in last night’s match against the Perth Scorchers.
“Cartwright underwent scans and spent overnight in hospital but has now been released and will rejoin the squad in Melbourne in the next few days. A return to play will be determined once he is back in Melbourne.”
Thunder coach Trevor Bayliss confirmed on Monday that David Warner had arrived in camp after his Test match commentary duties.
The Strikers and Thunder will announce their squads for the game later today.
