Melbourne Renegades all-rounder Will Sutherland has been named to play Victorian club cricket for Prahran on Saturday as he bids to prove his fitness for the BBL.
Sutherland has played at the elite level since sustaining a side strain at the start of November playing in the Sheffield Shield for Victoria against SA.
The big all-rounder looms as a key figure for the Renegades given his all-round capability. The ‘Gades also have a Round 1 double, making Sutherland an attractive SuperCoach option.
Sutherland played a Victorian 2nd XI game last week, but he didn’t bowl in either innings, playing as a batsman only, making 4 from 10 balls and 47 from 72.
He likely would’ve played for Prahran last weekend with three rounds of T20s scheduled but play was washed out across Melbourne.
The Melbourne forecast for Saturday is better, with 0-4mm of rain predicted, with Sutherland’s Prahran scheduled to play Northcote at Walter Galt Reserve in Parkdale from 9:30am.
That’s followed by another game later in the day at 4:30pm against Kingston Hawthorn at the same venue. It’s doubtful that Sutherland will be fit bowl yet.
The ‘Gades are also due to play the Melbourne Stars behind closed doors on Thursday in the lead-up to BBL|14.
There’s also another round of T20s in Victoria Premier Cricket next Saturday, prior to the ‘Gades season opener on Monday 16 December against the Sixers.
Speaking on the Vic State Cricket Podcast this week, Sutherland said: “I’ve missed these Shield games but I’ll be back for Big Bash. I can put some work into my batting as well.”
