The Melbourne Stars have reportedly bolstered their bowling stocks ahead of their Round 1 double with the signing of veteran fast bowler Peter Siddle.
Siddle, 40, had been uncontracted after playing only 4 games for the Melbourne Renegades last season. Code Sports’ Daniel Cherny is reporting the Stars have landed him for BBL|14.
The Stars appear short on quality quicks, with Scott Boland, Tom Curran, Joel Paris, Mark Steketee and Brody Couch on their books, following the exits of Nathan Coulter-Nile and Haris Rauf. They also have medium fast bowlers Beau Webster and Marcus Stoinis on their books.
The veteran may have been used sparingly in BBL|13 but has turned out regularly for Victoria at domestic level this season, including taking 10 wickets in 5 One-Day Cup games.
In a sign of his fitness and durability, he’s also played 3 Sheffield Shield games, including this week’s win over Queensland where he took 3 wickets.
Siddle did struggle in his final season with the Adelaide Strikers in 2022-23, managing only 6 wickets in 11 games, but the campaign prior to that led the BBL for wickets with 30 in 17 games.
In other Stars news, all-rounder Beau Webster’s call-up into the Test squad was confirmed late this week.
Webster’s maiden Test squad call-up comes as cover for fellow all-rounder Mitch Marsh who is battling some soreness.
In the event Marsh’s fitness is cleared, it is anticipated Webster would be released and free to play BBL Round 1.
