Melbourne Stars gun all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is in doubt for the start of BBL|14 after suffering a left hamstring injury in Australia’s T20I win over Pakistan on Monday.
Maxwell left the field at the end of the 13th over in Australia’s bowling innings, after grabbing at his left leg following an innocuous incident where he attempted to up his speed as he lightly chased after a ball.
The all-rounder spoke to medical staff on the bench and didn’t return to the game, later seen in a tracksuit watching on. He wasn’t required with the bat as Australia easily chased down the target.
Cricket Australia confirmed that Maxwell had suffered a “low-grade strain” in his left hamstring.
The injury concern comes with less than a month to the Stars’ opening BBL|14 game against the Perth Scorchers on Sunday 15 December.
Maxwell is a high-owned player in SuperCoach, with the Stars having a Round 1 double, along with a Round 3 double. The flurry of early fixtures is unlikely to be favourable to Maxwell.
If Maxwell is unavailable early, that may mean more overs for all-rounders Beau Webster, Marcus Stoinis and Tom Curran.
While the absence of Maxwell’s right-arm off-breaks could throw left-arm wrist spinner Hamish McKenzie into the mix.
In terms of the XI, the likes of Campbell Kellaway and Jono Merlo could replace Maxwell in the side.
