The Sydney Sixers have an injury concern ahead of BBL|14 with fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis exiting Australia’s ODI against England on Thursday.
Dwarshuis had made his ODI debut but only lasted 4 overs, taking 1-18, before leaving the field. He was seen in the rooms with strapping on his left shoulder.
CA put out a statement after the bowling innings: “Ben Dwarshuis has a suspected pectoral strain suffered while throwing off-balance from the boundary. He will not return to the field.”
In related news, the Sixers confirmed the re-signing of fast bowler Mitch Perry this week. Perry didn’t play at all in BBL|13.
Sydney Sixers General Manager Rachael Haynes said: “We’re incredibly lucky as a club to have had such a consistent group together for a significant amount of time, but it’s important that we’re always looking ahead to the future and to the next crop of young players coming through the ranks.”
In other signing news, the Stars announced that all-rounder Jono Merlo had re-committed to the Victorian franchise.
Stars GM Blair Crouch said: “Jonathan’s versatility and elite fielding is something that is valuable for this group and he gives us an extra option with both bat and ball.
“He’s a great person to have around the group and we know he’ll bring a lot of energy to the squad throughout BBL|14.”
Merlo played six games in BBL|13, but had an unusual role batting low in the order and rarely bowling. He made 8 runs in 3 innings and bowled once in 6 games, conceding 12 runs without a wicket.
In injury news, injury-prone Scorchers pair Jhye Richardson and Lance Morris have both been named to play for WA in upcoming one-dayers starting on Sunday.
Morris hasn’t played at any level since February when he suffered a side strain playing an ODI for Australia.
Hurricanes duo Nathan Ellis (hamstring) and Riley Meredith (side) will miss Tasmania’s opening two one-day games.
