Stay up to date throughout Round 22 with our rolling injury report from the coaches post-game. With the nine-game round extending from Friday night until Sunday, these snippets of info will be key.
Sydney v Collingwood
Sydney coach John Longmire heaped praise on Chad Warner and Isaac Heeney for their last quarter efforts. He said: “There’s some huge efforts in the last term and Chad and Isaac, their contest, the amount of contests that we won, the 50-50 balls … it’s probably a bit unfair to single out a couple, there was an enormous across the board effort in that last quarter.”
Robbie Fox was subbed out for Sydney, nursing a back issue earlier in the game. Collingwood confirmed a season-ending ACL injury for Harvey Harrison, suffered playing in the VFL on Friday.
Brisbane Lions v GWS Giants
Charlie Cameron twisted his ankle in the fourth quarter. Lachie Whitfield battled on despite a foot problem.
On Whitfield, GWS coach Adam Kingsley said: “I think he might have got stood on, I’m not sure exactly what it was. He went downstairs for a little bit and we were trying to find out. Then he was back on the ground. I don’t think it’s anything. He played the whole last quarter and didn’t appear to have an issue.”
Kingsley also offered updates on absent pair Kieren Briggs (managed) and Stephen Coniglio (shoulder). He said: “We’ve still got some players to come back in. I think Briggs and Coniglio will come back in next week hopefully. I would expect they will. I’ve said that about Cogs for a couple of weeks, so I probably shouldn’t.”
North Melbourne v West Coast
North coach Alastair Clarkson offered a short update on Harry Sheezel who laboured in the second half and spent time on the sidelines favouring one leg. He said: “He got a bit of an ankle, he got stomped on or something. He was a little bit sore in the second half… Hopefully it’s just a knock. We’ll get it assessed during the week and he’s good to go again.”
Clarkson praised ruckman Tristan Xerri who scored 168/185 (AF/SC). He said: “I thought big X in the ruck was really lionhearted. It was such a dominant display in the ruck from him.”
West Coast interim coach Jarrad Schofield offered an update on Harley Reid who was troubled by a leg problem. He said: “Not exactly (sure) what it was but it was a lower leg. He just wasn’t 100%. We thought he’s a match-winner too, so we thought we’d try something different… we decided just to put him forward. I’m not 100% sure what it is.”
Fremantle v Geelong
Sean Darcy was a late withdrawal for Fremantle, pulled out during the warm-up with left knee strapped having had soreness during the week.
On Darcy’s knee issue, Longmuir said: “In the short term, I am (worried). He’s going to carry a little bit of soreness in that knee for the rest of the year. We’ll manage him through that. Probably the six-day break this week caught him out.”
For Geelong, Tanner Bruhn was subbed out with “dizziness symptoms” and Gary Rohan was a late out having been set to return from concussion.
Essendon v Gold Coast
Essendon’s Nik Cox was subbed out due to concussion, while Dons coach Brad Scott said Harrison Jones had cramp late.
Melbourne v Port Adelaide
Jake Bowey and Taj Woewodin were both late withdrawals with gastro for Melbourne. Todd Marshall was subbed out for Port after a head clash. Miles Bergman copped a corked buttock.
Carlton v Hawthorn
Carlton had a raft of injuries, headlined by Charlie Curnow having a recurrence of his ankle problem. Blues coach Michael Voss said: “Given what we’re managing there, we accept it is going to be a bit like that for the rest of the season until he can get a rest really. Ideally, he doesn’t roll that ankle and he is OK. He was moving around OK. It is something he is going to have to manage.
“He was fine to go. He got through parts of training a couple of days ago, got running again yesterday, so unfortunately it is just a niggle players get at this part of the year. It is one of those we are going to manage… we’ll just take 24 hours and make sure we get the right assessment.”
Jordan Boyd, Jack Martin, Lachie Fogarty and Adam Saad also all had concerns and will be scanned on Monday. Voss said: “Boydy played with an adductor for most of the game, so he was on one leg doing the best he possibly could to try and help us. Martin with the hamstring. Fogarty with the shoulder. ‘Saady’ with a hamstring. Charlie with an ankle.”
Hawthorn subbed out Will Day at three-quarter time and coach Sam Mitchell explained that call. He said: “He was just cramping up. He’s obviously an important player for us. We’ve had a few guys who’ve been sore of late, he’s one of those. We want to make sure he’s cherry ripe for the rest of the season.”
Mitchell added that Changkuoth Jiath was a late withdrawal due to a tight calf.
Richmond v St Kilda
St Kilda coach Ross Lyon explained why Mattaes Phillipou was a late withdrawal. He said: “Phillipou just pulled out with an illness morning of the game. Tried to get up. Hopefully he recovers for next week.” Second-gamer Angus McLennan was subbed out with an injury but Lyon wasn’t asked about it.
Adelaide v Western Bulldogs
Adelaide subbed out veteran forward Taylor Walker after a poke to the eye. Dogs coach Luke Beveridge said Aaron Naughton was subbed out due to being a “bit ginger” with a sore knee. Tim English had a sore ankle at one point but Beveridge wasn’t asked about him.
