INJURY NEWS
Essendon have provided good news with Jye Caldwell “available for selection” following a late injury scare against Adelaide that saw him subbed out, but ultimately pass a HIA.
The Dons said: “Caldwell will also be available for selection following his head knock in Friday night’s loss to the Crows, passing the concussion test after the incident and showing no symptoms in the days since.”
In other Essendon news, Darcy Parish (calf) will face a fitness test later this week to prove he’s available to play against St Kilda.
Port Adelaide haven’t listed Connor Rozee on their latest injury report, instead clarifying that he’s expected to be available.
The Port update said: “Connor Rozee is recovering from a corky to the hip pointer, which had him sit out part of the final quarter on Saturday, but the captain is expected to be available.”
Melbourne confirmed Christian Salem will be sidelined due to a low-grade hamstring strain. Dees high performance manager Selwyn Griffith said: “Christian came to the bench after feeling his hamstring cramp in the third period after accelerating.
“He wasn’t able to return to the field due to a loss of strength. Scans have shown that he does have a low-grade hamstring strain, so he’ll miss this week and we’ll continue to progress him through hamstring reconditioning protocols.”
The Dees also revealed Koltyn Tholstrup has entered concussion protocols. Griffith said: “Koltyn had a head knock in the game. He passed the initial SCAT and was cleared of anything there.
“Following us returning to Melbourne, he had some delayed symptoms with headaches and altered vision and has now entered the concussion protocol. So, he’ll progress through that as symptoms settle.”
Melbourne also clarified Max Gawn is “tracking well” to return from an ankle injury. Griffith said: “Max trained really well last week and had another great session over the weekend, he’s been an absolute professional in his recovery. He’ll look to integrate into full training tomorrow and then we’ll make an assessment on his availability following training tomorrow.”
Gold Coast have offered updates on Jarrod Witts (back) and Touk Miller (wrist). The Suns said: “Co-captain Jarrod Witts will need to prove he can train fully this week if he is to become available for selection again after sustaining a fracture in his back in Round 16.
“Fellow co-captain Touk Miller is taking positive strides in his recovery from a fractured wrist and is one to two weeks away from a return to play.”
St Kilda have listed Mattaes Phillipou (hip) as being 1-2 weeks away. Collingwood confirmed Nathan Kreuger is in concussion protocols, while Charlie Dean will be assessed this week with a view to returning after his stint in protocols.
Richmond offered updates on Tim Taranto and Nick Vlastuin who are both set to return.
Tigers Physical Performance Manager Luke Meehan said about Taranto: “All signs are looking good at the moment. He trained today (Tuesday), he needs to pass his test on Thursday, but all signs are good at the moment for him to return (on Sunday).”
On Vlastuin, Meehan said: “Nick’s been managing his back pretty much for the whole season. It just got to the point where we thought a week off would really benefit him to finish the year strongly. He trained really strongly today and he’ll be available this week.”
The Tigers also confirmed Toby Nankervis is in concussion protocols. Meehan said: “He’s okay, Toby. He’s frustrated that he’s not training, he loves to be out there the boys. Hopefully he’ll recover this week and we’ll see him next week.”
Carlton confirmed ruckman Tom De Koning’s home-and-away season is over, after picking up two injuries from the weekend, including a collapsed lung and a fractured foot.
Carlton General Manager of Football Brad Lloyd said: “Tom reported symptoms of being unwell within half an hour of the game finishing, so the priority for us was immediately ensuring he got the treatment he needed and he is now recovering with the appropriate care around him.
“Tom will undergo surgery this week to correct his foot injury, which we expect will sideline him for the remainder of the home-and-away season, and we will continue to monitor his recovery over that period of time.”
Stephen Coniglio is a test to return from a shoulder issue. GWS head of medical James Rahme said: “Stephen will need to complete full contact training this week but is presenting well.”
But the Giants revealed Isaac Cumming is expected to be miss 6 weeks with a hamstring injury.
Out of nowhere, Adelaide have listed Matt Crouch as a test following mid-season shoulder surgery, having been expected to be out for the rest of the season.

Fremantle confirmed Alex Pearce had suffered a fractured left forearm again with no return to play timeline revealed but a stint on the sidelines likely, opening the door for Josh Draper.
Geelong revealed Tom Atkins will face a test after being a late out with a back complaint.
