As we near the end of the fantasy season everyone will have different goals in mind. Whether that is winning your cash league, bragging rights or going for that elusive hat, the theory is basically the same; find the players who will hit a ceiling score and blow your opponents away. Let’s see if we can find some for you today.
Big time players
Some players find their way to a respectable average year after year by simply being consistent and having a nice high floor, while others with the same average play the roller coaster game, going big 100s and random low scores. The challenge now is to find the guys who can hit those big scores to give you a point of difference and a season defining captain score.
Errol Gulden ($1.03m, Mid)
If we are going to look at ceiling, then the first in the list has to be the Swans dynamo. Since his mid season bye he has hit the 150 mark not once, not twice, but three times! Of his remaining opponents, he has either not played them this year, or scored a 111 or better. It is a lot of money but if you do not have Gulden, do not expect to do any damage come final’s time. A must have.
Lachie Whitfield ($998k, Def)
Talk about some serious form. Has not dipped below 106 since his bye, has gone over 120 six times this year with a top score of 160! Another one who will cost you, but has put himself well and truly into the must have category.
Josh Dunkley (1.00m, Mid)
Still only owned by 14% of the competition, Dunks has only dropped under 100 4 times this year. To go with this, he has hit the 140+ mark 3 times. As safe a captain option as there is and can also produce an epic ceiling game? Yes please.
Rowan Marshall ($977k, Ruck)
Now rucks is an interesting line at the moment as you cannot really go wrong. Tim English has a great run coming up, Toby Nankervis has been amazing and even Kieren Briggs is in some serious form, but it is hard to go past Marshall when looking for a ceiling guy. Top scores in 2024 of 171, 164 and 150 suggest he knows how to go full ham. Look at the weather forecast closely as we saw what he can do in the wet on the weekend and boy oh boy was it good.
Jye Caldwell ($957k, Mid/Fwd)
Now we have been banging on about this guy for a while, but can you believe he has not dipped below 120 since his bye! He was always in the mix for a top six forward, but recently he has blown expectations out of the park and is one of the only must haves up forward. Looks like a great captain option now too.
Marcus Bontempelli ($987k, Mid)
Now current owners may not be as happy about this guy as he is one of the more roller coast type players, but with scores of 152, 149 and 142 this year he is hard to ignore. Has Geelong this week, then games against Adelaide, Melbourne and North to come, I would have Bont right up the top of your shopping list, especially as the Dogs try and push for finals.
Lachie Neale ($947k, Mid)
I could not leave Lachie Neale out based just on form alone. It is no coincidence that Brisbane are back in the top 4 hunt as Neale has hit his best form. Neale may now be sniffing around another Brownlow (can you believe it) and I cannot see him slowing down. The tag is always a risk with Neale so check the fixture carefully, but he is seriously getting it done at the moment.
Now although form would not suggest these guys are current targets, you have to remember that good players are good players for a reason and everyone has dips in form throughout the year. What we are looking for is the guys who are “capable” of hitting those big scores. If you see anything that suggests a change in game plan or role, leading to increased scoring for any of these guys, do not be afraid to jump back on:
- Dayne Zorko ($931k, Mid/Fwd) Top Scores: 184, 148, 127
- Luke Ryan ($849k, Def) 161, 144, 142
- Sam Walsh ($894k, Mid) 145, 143, 133
- Nic Newman ($894k, Def) 144, 143
- Noah Anderson ($904k, Mid) 154, 142, 140
