One way to get ahead in AFL Fantasy and SuperCoach is monitoring role changes and midfield time. It’ll help justify trade-ins and trade-outs, so we’ve dug deep to offer some critical insights.
Saints drop tag, Phillipou an option?
Marcus Windhager won’t play next week due to a hamstring injury but St Kilda actually already gave up the tag, so you don’t need to fear that as much moving forward. Windhager didn’t attend any CBAs, with Mattaes Phillipou coming in for 63%.
Philippou’s return after 6 weeks in the VFL is intriguing, scoring 117/112 (AF/SC) and being clearly in St Kilda’s midfield rotation, potentially offering a new role for a former top 10 draft pick priced at only $408k in Fantasy and $218k in SuperCoach. F6? Monitor another week for the role.
Colby monopolises kick-ins
If you’re considering other value downgrades, look no further than Colby McKercher who monopolized North’s kick-ins on his return. Note, Zac Fisher was out but McKercher took 11 out of 11 North kick-ins, pumping his numbers up to 123/134 (AF/SC) with 37 disposals.
Colby is priced at only $667k in Fantasy and $444k in SuperCoach, so definitely consider the move.
Bont’s CBAs well down
It’s only been two games since Marcus Bontempelli was in doubt due to a back injury, so it was noticeable he only attendance 46% centre bounces against Port, perhaps with that issue still lingering? He’s still scored 100/106 (AF/SC), beware using the VC or C on him for now.
Butters season-low CBAs
On the same topic, Zak Butters only had 31% CBAs for Port, which was a season low for him. Even if he wasn’t subbed, it was on track for a very low amount. He was on track for a bumper score before being subbed in the fourth on 136/159 (AF/SC). Note, 20 of his 33 disposals were on the wing. That outside role combined with the subbing hints he may be managing some kind of injury.
Flanders mid role confirmed
Sam Flanders’ midfield role is back, attending 62% centre bounces in Round 17, having had 87% the week prior. Flanders had been playing in defence since Round 8 but that seems to be over, although Touk Miller’s (28%) wrist injury meant means there’s likely no trickle-on effect beyond him. For what it’s worth, Flanders still scored 87/104 (AF/SC).
Other notes
- Dylan Shiel’s return to Essendon’s midfield saw him attend 57% centre bounces, squeezing the share of Archie Perkins (25%) and Sam Durham (43%) mostly. Jye Caldwell still had 79% CBAs and scored 130/134 (AF/SC).
- No surprise, once Sean Darcy exited Freo’s game with concussion, Luke Jackson’s CBAs rose, ending with 62% (his highest since Round 10 which was the last game Darcy missed) and a score of 104/121 (AF/SC).
- Brennan Cox loves a kick-in so his return potentially was going to impact Luke Ryan, but only took 1 kick-in, with Ryan leading the way with 6 of their 12.
- Sam De Koning played ruck for Geelong for the third straight week, attending 86% centre bounces, scoring 106/125 (AF/SC). Last chance to grab him with his price surging up.
- Rookie Zac Taylor was used as sub again by Adelaide and got 23% CBAs in his 21% time on ground, scoring 16/15 (AF/SC). Perhaps there’s a mid-role for him if he’s in the 22.
