I can’t believe we are already at Round 6! Last week we struck gold with some left field picks and hoping to keep the momentum flowing. Jack Steele and Marcus Bontempelli on Thursday night footy, yes please!
ROUND 6 VICE CAPTAINS:
Jack Steele
Here we are again mentioning this guy! He was my back up last week if Gawn failed and he ended up with 143 SuperCoach points. He seems to be maintaining his disposal efficiency with 83% on the weekend against a high pressure side. Of midfielders that have played 5 or more games, he is currently ranked 2nd averaging 130 points and only one player is ahead of him, Rowell who is averaging 131 points per game. His recent history against the Dogs has been slightly inconsistent scoring 96, 133, 99 and 137 but he does enjoy playing at Marvel where he scored 126 earlier this season and has a career average of 103.7 over 74 games. With no Libba this week for the Dogs he is a great shout for VC.
Marcus Bontempelli
You can’t keep a champion down. This club is under serious pressure and The Bont knows how to carry his side. Since 2022 Bont has only scored 5 sub 100 scores. Last week he was completely nullified by the Bombers scoring 73 points and I just can’t see it happening in back to back games. With Libba being out he will have to attend every centre bounce which will definitely assist in increasing his score. In recent clashes Bont has absolutely dominated scoring 125, 181 and 159. I was super keen on Steele this week but after seeing Bont’s recent history, it’s hard to ignore.
Zach Merrett
This man loves the match up of Adelaide and also really enjoys playing at Adelaide Oval. His last 4 match ups against the Crows he averages 133.5 points with a top score of 143 points. He has a career average of 114.9 over 14 matches at Adelaide Oval which is very consistent. He is showing he is a great captain for Essendon driving standards and deserves to be consider as your VC this week if you own him.
ROUND 6 CAPTAIN OPTIONS
Zak Butters
This season Collingwood have given up massive points to midfielders including 142, 136, 132, 129 and 120. Only one game this year where a premium midfielder has not posted a captain worthy score was against Hawthorn where Newcombe score 110. Butters has a 5 round average of 127.8 which includes a 98 in that cycle. I just love his contested work and attack on the ball. He is a solid VC/C option this week.
Tom Green
One thing I noticed about Tom’s game last week is he has been having around 8 tackles a game and only managed 1 on the weekend. Also over the last two weeks his contested possessions have slightly dropped from his big scoring weeks. Although, Carlton have not conceded massive scores this season and are the 5th hardest team to score against in the midfield. I just have a feeling he bounces back. Last time they played against each other at Marvel he scored 145 SuperCoach points. It’s a game that means so much and I’m so pumped to watch the two bulls Crippa and Green go head to head.
Matt Rowell
Last week was the first time I have felt confident in recommending the grass eating bull and he didn’t disappoint. He is the number one averaging midfield this year in SuperCoach, which is something a lot of us didn’t predict. His last two games against the Swans have both been 119 and you just feel he is a 20 point better player this season. Although the Swans have had a pretty strong start, opposing midfielders have managed to score well against them. If you own and your VC fails, I feel confident enough to roll the dice again.
Round 6 POD CAPTAIN OPTION
Sam Walsh
This is a risky call but if you are picking a player off one game and is coming off an injury then why not go full boonter and whack the C on him. In his last 6 games and GWS he has posted a 2 really solid scores of 149 and 132, coming off 166 on the weekend, get on!
