Round 1 is behind us and we are into the first week of the early byes, which means things will be a little bit different…
Being able to lock in a VC from any game over the weekend by using a player on the bye (my understanding is they don’t lock out until the first bounce of the final game of the weekend), opens things up a little bit for us rather than having to use someone from an early game, so read below to see your top 5 captain/vice captain options this weekend!
Top 5 VC/C picks
- Caleb Serong
For the around 5% of coaches who started with Serong in Round 1, what a way to start the year! 161 points from 46 disposals is what you dream about from you premium mids, and I think he has every chance to back it up with another dominant performance this week. Last week Tom Green scored 145 against North Melbourne thanks to 37 disposals of his own, and I think Serong will follow suit this week.
North are playing with a young and inexperienced midfield, and I am unsure they have anyone who can do a run with role in there either. Serong had 115 on North in round 2 in a loss last year, and he should continue his fine form to start the year. Playing on Saturday, he will be my VC, with me being very confident that I won’t be needing to back someone else in later in the weekend to be an outright captain for me.
- Nick Daicos
The best possible thing that could have happened for Nick Daicos owners to start the year has happened, and that is that Nick has dominated as expected, but Collingwood are losing.
This should seriously lower the risk of a tag on the young gun. He has scored 111 and 123 to start the year, and had 136 against the Saints last year, who don’t mind giving up fantasy points. The threat of a Windhager tag will always exist, but I am confident Nick will avoid it and be scoring north of 120 again this week. He would be my VC this week leading into Serong captain if I owned him.
- Tom Green
He has been exactly what everyone thought he would be in the pre-season. Starting the year off with scores of 116 and 145, he heads into a soft match up against West Coast this week.
There is a risk that Ginbey or Yeo go and stand next to him, but I don’t think it will have too much of an impact. He has a bye next week, so will be doing everything he can to get his hands on the pill as many times as possible before he has a rest, Green is a great captaincy option with a huge ceiling this week.
- Tim English
In a tough match up to kick off his season, English showed that he is just going to continue on from last year, pumping out a 113 against Gawn and his Dees. This week he comes up against Witts, who O’Brien had 86 against last week, and they are playing at Mars, where English had scores of 121, 153 and 96 last year.
The 96 was in a very tough ruck match up against the Hawks. Another option with a huge ceiling, if you started the set and forget rucks this year, English has as good an argument as anyone to be your captain this week.
- Marcus Bontempelli
Those who started and especially those who captained Bont in Round 1 have every right to be disappointed… But I think they may be in a different mood after this weekend’s game. Up until half time last week, it looked as though Bont was worth every cent you paid for him, then he just slowed down in the second half.
After a loss to start their season, I don’t think the Doggies skipper will slow down this week. Bont’s last 2 scores against the Suns have both been 116, and with Gold Coast’s midfield firing to start the season I expect Bont to stand up and bounce back this week.
POD picks
That is the top 5 for this week. Seeing as there could certainly be some teams out there that don’t own any of those guys, and the fact I didn’t give any separate VC options, I’ll do a quick fire of some guys who were unlucky to miss out this week.
Butters/Rozee are both great options against the Tigers, who the Suns mids made a mess of in opening round. If you are one of the 2% of coaches who own Josh Kelly, his last score against the Eagles was 124, and it is certainly a match up he could make the most of.
And the last guy I considered this week as a bit of a point of difference after starting his year off with 32 touches and 120 points is Harry Sheezel for those who might want to go a bit left field…
All the best to you all for Round 2!
