There may be a five-day break until Round 2 of SuperCoach BBL but that shouldn’t halt planning with plenty to weigh up for trade targets headlined by the Adelaide Strikers who have a standalone double.
While the Strikers are mighty attractive for that reason, Round 1 brings surprise performers who quickly become cash generating cows, whom will be hard to turn down.
With that in mind, it’s worth weighing up utilising a trade boost to bolster your Round 2 Strikers ranks (don’t forget they’ve got a Round 3 bye) but also ensure you’re not missing out on any cash cows.
To help weigh all that up, we’ve looked at 6-7 trade targets, with pros/cons:
Matt Short $244k BAT/BWL
He’s super expensive but he’s a must have as Adelaide’s most compelling SuperCoach given he opens the batting and bowls overs. He’s also a handy fielder, so gets points via all disciplines. Plus that makes him the perfect captain option in a standalone double. You’re likely going to have to pay up, with many coaches utilising a straight swap from Jhye Richardson. His breakeven is 144, but don’t let that turn you off. He just ticks all the boxes.
David Payne $139k BWL
There were coaches who shrewdly stashed Payne as a loophole in Round 1 after he wasn’t named in their initial squad given he was still traveling. The left-arm medium fast bowler was excellent late last season for the Scorchers and he’s been slated for a similar role at the Strikers, bowling up front in the power play but also in the juicy death overs where SuperCoach points often flow. Should be a lock for two games and his price seems slightly unders. Averaged 36.71 and 46.14 SC points in The Hundred and the Vitality Blast respectively. D’Arcy Short $67k BAT
Another one who plenty of coaches stashed on the bench in Round 1, Short is a two-time BBL Player of the Year who went off the boil in recent seasons at the Hurricanes leading to his move to Adelaide. Perhaps new surrounds will work for him. The ceiling is high and coach Jason Gillespie has confirmed the role is too, revealing he’ll open with the other Short and he’s also hinted his part-time spin may be used to. At that price, it’d be a big risk to fade him.
Wes Agar $149k BWL
Very good BBL fast bowler who was the club’s leading wicket-taker last season, claiming 18 scalps in 13 games. Took 22 wickets in BBL|10 so he’s got good history. With Peter Siddle gone, he’d been slated for his death overs’ role which lends itself to SC points. The role seems there, plus he’s done it before, while his form is good despite a recent back issue, taking 16 wickets in his past two Shield games.

Jamie Overton $125k BAT/BWL
A lot cheaper than fellow all-rounder James Bazley, who comes in at $165k, and seems billed for the same role. The problem is we’ve never seen the Englishman in the BBL before, so it feels risky. Big-hitting Overton will likely bat anywhere from 5-7 and there’s no guarantee he’ll get his full allocation of overs, let alone any. He averaged 47.2 SC points in The Hundred batting 6-7 with regular strike rate bonus points but only three wickets in 10 games. He didn’t bowl at all in the Vitality Blast after a back injury, averaging only 26.69 SC points batting mostly from 4-7. View more on his form/role in those comps here.
Mitch Swepson $103k BWL
Produced an unbelievable Round 1 score of 162. He’s highly owned but his past few BBL campaigns and more recent white-ball form didn’t indicate that was likely. Putting that aside, his breakeven is now -70, so he’s going to shotgun in value in Round 2 and he’s still affordable. Yes there’s a Round 3 bye coming, but the cash gen is going to be huge. Ride that.
Tanveer Sangha $103k BWL
Simply a must-have at this stage, if you didn’t own him in Round 1. Missed BBL|12 due to injury, thus came in under-priced and scored 94 first up, surging up $20k. The Thunder have a Round 4 double and with a Round 2 breakeven of -35, he may have gone up significantly by then if you wait.
Hamish McKenzie $56k BWL
Only scored 77 in a double, but don’t forget one game he didn’t get a chance to do anything. His breakeven is -27. Ticking heaps of boxes, right? Just wait. His spot in the Scorchers side isn’t secure, with Ashton Agar likely back from injury next game, while Zak Crawley’s return may see Cooper Connolly down the order, forcing McKenzie out. Seems harsh but it’s on the cards. With Scorchers’ byes in Rounds 4 and 5, you can probably wait on him.
Jack Edwards $76k BAT
Bit of a similar story to McKenzie. Performed admirably in the Sixers’ two games but the impending return of Hayden Kerr may see him bumped out of the side. His breakeven is -20 and he’ll likely get DPP status in Round 4, so keep an eye on him.
