With roughly 50 days still to go prior to Round 1, there’s no right answer on those spots right now (with more cheapies/replacement players to be added still), so we’re here to help you out, with a few names to monitor at domestic level in the lead-up to BBL|13.
Jack Edwards ($62k BAT)
Those who follow domestic cricket closely will know why Edwards’ name is top of this list, putting together a strong start to the 2023-24 season with NSW on the back of his maiden first-class century in March. Edwards, who is listed as a bat only, has taken eight wickets in three Marsh Cup games this season, plus he scored 92 last month batting as an opener. He’s always had the talent and some opportunities with the Sixers, but maybe now the 2-3year-old is putting it together in time for BBL|13. The next question is if he’s in the Sixers’ best XI and where he fits, potentially coming in for the currently injured Hayden Kerr or someone like Dan Hughes, although he scored half-centuries in his past five consecutive games. One to monitor.
Jake Fraser-McGurk ($62k BAT)
JFM has always been billed as a top emerging talent but it just hasn’t happened for him at the top level, leading to him switching Victoria for SA this season. The 21-year-old has often been shuffled around the Renegades’ batting line-up too, not helping him development due to a lack of continuity but if he can put together some consistent form at SA, he’ll warrant a regular top four spot at BBL level. He helped that cause with a world record fastest one-day century a fortnight, scoring 125 from 38 balls as an opener against Tasmania. He’s tough to pick as a bat-only but if he gets a gig opening, with a first-up Gades double, he may be worth a punt.
Max Bryant ($66k BAT)
Similar to JFM, Bryant has often teased but rarely delivered with any substance in SuperCoach. He’s the perennial pre-season cheapie, but with the Heat’s Round 1 triple game, he gains some extra interest. Bryant averaged an underwhelming 21.4 across seven rounds last season, scoring 50+ only once. He’s also been batting down at five at Marsh Cup level and in the BBL last season, which isn’t a SC friendly role. But perhaps a top-order spot opens up when Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne exit for Test duty. He’ll need some form to back that up. It’s a no, unless the form turns.
Jack Wildermuth ($91k BWL)
A bit pricier than everyone else on this list, but is a genuine all-round option who has delivered at BBL level before, taking 13 wickets in 12 games in BBL|10. Combine that with the Heat’s Round 1 triple and Wildermuth should attract interest. Wildermuth is a bit forgotten as he missed most of last season due to injury, however that means he’s reduced in price. He’s shown good signs recently that he’s back to form and fitness in both the KFC T20 Max along with the Marsh Cup where he took a 3fa in a prime death overs role against Victoria on Thursday. With James Bazley departed and Michael Neser potentially with the Test squad, maybe Wildermuth gets four overs and bats 6-7 in a dream role.
Billy Stanlake ($62k BWL)
‘Big Billy’ has a bad injury history, which will scare away plenty. Stanlake’s Hobart Hurricanes also are one of only three clubs without a Round 1 double/triple. The Canes also don’t play a double until Round 7. Thus there’s plenty of reasons to ignore Stanlake, but as a wicket-taking bowler, he could be a cash cow. The beanpole quick has put together a run of three games for Tasmania this Marsh Cup season, taking five wickets, which could be very handy if he replicates that at BBL level. Don’t forget, this is a guy who’s played for Australia at ODI and T20I level. With Joel Paris and Faheem Ashraf gone, there’s a role for him if he’s fit and ready. Don’t rule it out.
