It’s late in the season for news from the VFL is increasingly less relevant but Mason Cox’s performance may impact Darcy Cameron, while Nick Daicos’ injury has some SuperCoaches desperate for cover.
Firstly at Collingwood, Darcy Cameron attended 83% CBAs and scored 80/74 without Cox in the AFL side, but the American pressed his case for a recall in the VFL with a strong display.
Cox had 46 hit-outs in the ruck against Werribee’s Kobe Annand, booting one goal from 15 disposals, with five marks and four tackles.
Nick Daicos’ owners are scrambling to sort out a trade, but you’ve got to feel for those in SuperCoach who’ve already used up theirs, so cover will become important. Among the defender rookies in contention, Fremantle’s Karl Worner had 26 disposals in a good performance after a calf injury.
GWS defender Cameron Fleeton has been pretty consistent in the VFL without earning a recall given their strong backline stocks, so his 23 touches and six marks are probably unlikely to warrant an AFL return.
Sydney’s Matt Roberts must be a close to a recall, having had a game-high 35 disposals with six tackles and five inside 50s in the VFL Sydney Derby. He isn’t a defender, but as a mid/forward you can make it work with some DPP maneuvers.
Swans teammate Will Gould hasn’t had a look-in since Round 10 but booted four goals in the VFL having been switched to the forward line lately, so maybe there’s a road back into the side.
Gold Coast’s Charlie Constable didn’t get a chance to push his case with the Suns having a VFL bye, but there is a backline spot vacant after Wil Powell’s ankle injury.
Debutants aren’t overly relevant at this time of year, except for impacting a player’s price in 2024, with Essendon forward Patrick Voss in contention after three goals in the VFL.
Will Setterfield returned to the Bombers’ VFL side after months out with injury, having 20 disposals so his potential AFL return could impact someone like Round 20 debutant Elijah Tsatas.
