Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin provided a vague update on the timeline for Clayton Oliver while Marcus Bontempelli looks to have be fine after his knee knock and Nat Fyfe is set for his first full game since Round 1.
UPDATES
Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin offered an update on the hamstring strain sustained by Clayton Oliver (AF $990k SC $658k MID) with the club offering no timeline earlier in the week, except saying he’ll be out in the “short term”.
Goodwin said: “Clearly he’s got a hamstring strain. It’s a minor strain. We’re just going to build him through that process. How long that takes, we’re unsure. He’s such a diligent player around his rehab and his ability to get his body right. We’ll give him every chance in the next few weeks to work through those processes. We’re not sure how long that is. That can be frustrating for our supporters, the media to not know a timeline but we don’t know one.
“We’re going to build him up through his process, make sure he hits all his targets and his measures. Obviously we’re going to be very cautious with him as well. He’s an important player for us. We’re going to make sure he’s right first and foremost, but we’re not quite sure how long that’ll be at the moment.
“We’ve had the scans, it’s minor, but we’ve got to treat it with respect and go through the process. We’re hopeful it’s not too long but we’ll just have to wait and see.”
Marcus Bontempelli (AF $958k SC $707k MID) looks like he’ll have no issues getting up to play this round after a knee worry last game. Dogs coach Luke Beveridge said: “He has (pulled up OK). The alarm bells always go off when any of your players need attention during the game. The way it happened with the tackle from behind which can be nasty. He’s OK, he’ll train today & we think he’s going to be fine to front up against Gold Coast.”
Beveridge also said Josh Bruce was unlikely to return this week despite being available, while Adam Treloar hadn’t been ruled out yet after a hamstring injury.
He said: “(Treloar) He’ll train today and he’ll probably do a fair bit of the session. He’s most likely not going to play this week. I won’t close the door on it, I’ll see how he goes today.”
Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew confirmed Ben Long will return to face the Dogs in Darwin, with Sean Lemmens out due to injury, while he said they would “potentially” make other changes.
Dew offered a timeline on Touk Miller’s (AF $877k SC $592k MID) knee injury. Dew said: “He’s starting to train again. He got through the (knee) brace stage really quickly, his leg strength didn’t really diminish. He’ll start to run and train. I’m not a doctor but, in his words, he’s talked about the last 5-6 games (Round 18-19). Then it’s just a stage thing, how quickly you get to the next stage and how your body holds the next stage. He does everything right.”

Sydney coach John Longmire said Tom Hickey hadn’t yet cleared concussion protocols, which may impact Lachlan McAndrew’s (AF $230k SC $123k F/R) selection and/or role. Longmire said: “Hick, we’ll see how goes today with the training session and see whether he ticks everything off today. He’d be the only one (to return) at this stage.”
Longmire ruled out Tom McCartin due to ongoing concussion symptoms, while he said Peter Ladhams is on crutches after his significant ankle lateral ligament injury further impacting their tall stocks.
Sydney Head of Physiotherapy and Medical Services Damian Raper offered an update on Callum Mills (AF $739k SC $471k MID) who is out with a calf injury. Raper said: “Callum’s rehabilitation on his calf injury is going well. He has commenced introductory running drills and strength training.”
There was an update on Matt Roberts (AF $223k SC $148k M/F) too, with Raper saying: “He is expected to come out of the brace next week and commence running drills.”
Hawthorn revealed in their injury report that Changkuoth Jiath isn’t due to back from a calf issue until Round 13 which may be good for the role and job security of Seamus Mitchell (AF $470k SC $267k D/F) and Josh Weddle (AF $395k SC $230k DEF).
Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir confirmed that Nat Fyfe (AF $480k SC $243k M/F) was fit and available for a full game, having returned from a foot injury with managed minutes over the past three games, playing twice as sub before being subbed last week after playing primarily midfield. Longmuir said: “We don’t feel like we need to sub him out this week. We’ll keep evolving his role and where he can have impact for us… he’ll play a similar role to last week, I would’ve thought.”
