It was a whopping round for AFL Fantasy points, headlined by the Zak/Zachs (Butters and Merrett) and a thrilling Dreamtime game befitting of Sir Doug Nicholls Round.
Yartapuulti v Narrm
Freak: Butters (148)
Flop: Gawn (66)
Rookie Roulette: Williams (82), Chandler (68), JVR (43), Lord (40), McVee (39), Evans (37)
Are they allowed to award six Brownlow votes for a single game? That’s what Zak Butters rightfully deserves. This was a ripping game from both a footy and fantasy perspective. Rozee (121) returned to form but honestly was still overshadowed by Butters’ brilliance. I can’t stop talking about it. Fool me for not putting the VC on it. Houston (115) delivered again but this game wasn’t without some significant floppage. Oliver (108) was good but is on injury watch. Petracca (85) wasn’t as impactful as usual and those gearing up to bring Gawn (66) in after he gets DPP might be reconsidering….Crikey he is cheap though.
Poor old Angus Brayshaw (57) has copped a lot from me this year but what the heck was that?! With Salem (73) coming back I thought there might be a possibility of more midfield time, but instead they just split the points between them. Gus did get 30% CBAs but that isn’t a significant bump. Pass.
Finally, a good shout out to Dyl Will who once again is asking us all why nobody has him.
North v Sydney
Freak: Sheezel (112)
Flop: Interchange stewards
Rookie Roulette: Wardlaw (82), McAndrew (66), Phillips (54), Spicer (48), Gould (29), Drury (14), Sheldrick (8)
Oh. Good. GOD. North, north, north. It was looking so good! A big upset? Wardlaw having a blinder debut? Nvm, put it all in the bin, do one too many bench rotations instead. From a fantasy perspective, Simpkin (115) stood up in LDU’s absence and he’s very, very cheap, but you’d have to be prepared for a bit of a rollercoaster. Parker (113) was very good again, and the price is still good. Gulden (106) copped a tag at first but then racked it up, but didn’t quite put together enough for a VC score.
Gee, Wardlaw looks good. Pay up. He’ll get a solid run at it. If you can’t afford him, find a way or bring in McAndrew, who will also get a good run at it now with Sydney’s ruck department looking thin.
Bulldogs v Adelaide
Freak: Laird (131)
Flop: Dawson (85)
Rookie Roulette: Pedlar (46), Michalanney (45), Jones (24), O’Donnell (10)
Sweet relief! Macrae (117) finally did it. But crikey, he got only four CBAs. The DPP prospect is good so obviously you’re holding… but he mightn’t even be a top 6 forward. Bailey Smith (121) on the other hand looks GOOD. We have to remember Treloar will return and put a dent in that, but Smith will be a top 6 forward. Bring him in if you can.
This was a terrific game for fantasy with a whopping ten centuries notched up. Amongst them the usual suspects English (121), Bont (110) and Laird, who put the disposals together with the tackles this week. Unfortunately, Bont might be on injury watch alongside Clarry. Bailey Dale (130) benefitted after Johannisen (43) went down with a hammy. You’ll have to move on JJ but he’s made you enough cash to make money down to a Hobbs, or jump up to a proper premium. Pedlar too can go, but its not without a bit of nervousness. He’s picking up CBAs and this was a bad game for Adelaide, which affected him.
Walyalup v Geelong
Freak: Brayshaw (135)
Flop: Stewart (72)
Rookie Roulette: Knevitt (57), Johnson (40), Dempsey (11)
I have to tip my hat to Walyalup. I confidently declared they would lose by forty points but unbelievable performances from Brayshaw, Serong (125) and Lachie Schultz (114) didn’t drag them over the line so much as have them sprint past it in Q4.
A disappointing game from Stewart, especially given the absence of Duncan and frequency of the ball’s presence in the defensive half. He will be fine, unlike subbed man Sam Simpson (18) who a few people took a punt on a couple of weeks ago.
Brisbane v Gold Coast
Freak: Ashcroft (127)
Flop: Anderson (79)
Rookie Roulette: Wilmot (74), Sharp (52), Berry (11)
Like Sheezel, Ashcroft has now earned his way off the Rookie Roulette list. This one would have really hurt for the aggressive traders who went early last week. I maintain the move had merit, but you could now consider holding him through the byes.
Ashcroft was so good he nearly made me forget Dunks (125) who padded out the stat lines nicely and McCluggage (128), but I just couldn’t take the risk on him. Neale (117) bobbed his head up, took the medal and is yo-yoing in and out of my watchlist every week. He’s ridiculously cheap. Humphrey (90) rewarded those who paid up as did irritatingly good pair RatGoat (84/80). Sharp shot up in price but you’re probably not doing it this week given the bye is very close now.
Noah Anderson (79) on the other hand has returned to his early-season form and has dished up two floptastic scores in a row. Insult to injury, he’s not even a juicy price so the move to bring him in for his good bye is not very tempting.
Essendon v Richmond
Freak: Merrett (158)
Flop: Baker (55)
Rookie Roulette: Baldwin (64), Menzie (59), Davey (47), Ryan (47), Clarke (15)
Merrett loves the big stage. No Parish, no Setterfield, no Shiel, no problem. Another high-scoring affair with eleven tons, including big ones from superstars Bolton (120) and Rioli (114). Less predictable was one from old mate Andy McGrath (117). Some would’ve finally had enough and traded him this week, probably to Hobbsy (92), so at least it wasn’t a disaster. You can’t expect Hobbs to do that every week but I think he gets a good go at it now so I will probably bring him in. TT (120) took the captain’s armband for me again and just ticked over another big hundred to keep his ton run going. Samson Ryan’s performance was noticeably affected by Nank’s (94) return and you could cash in and go to McAndrew, although having DPP from them both through the byes would be helpful.
Hawthorn v Eagles
Freak: Weddle (102)
Flop: Ginbae (24)
Rookie Roulette: Weddle (102), Mackenzie (94), Mitchell (85), Chesser (37), Long (34), Ginbae (24)
Eagles mightily victorious in the Harley Reid cup, driven home by sterling performances from Sheed (139) and Witho (125). Rookie roulette was everywhere here, with the differential between Ginbae and Weddle being like a million points or something. I maintain Ginbae was burned a few tackles by the stat man but I am just bitter and literally nothing can explain it. Why are the Eagles bothering to tag? O’Neill (64) sat on Will Day (86) who’s becoming a bit frustrating. SicDog (125) once again shows how much he loves Tasmania and the Eagles showed how much they love Harley Reid. Heads might roll after that.
Carlton v Collingwood
Freak: Docherty (124)
Flop: Daicos (79)
Rookie Roulette: Hollands (32)
Doch is just a good player. It’s a shame his team simply can’t put it together and launched into a new, exciting tactic to kick the ball directly to Darcy Moore (110) as often as possible. Kennedy (78) was a reasonable mid-pricer but faded late when shifted to half back after Hewett (39) was subbed on. Nick Daicos let us down a little, but we can’t really stay mad can we? Walshy (90) gave up some points this week but it is by no means panic stations, Collingwood are just very very good, apart from Adams who put up an alarming 27.
GWS v St Kilda
Freak: Sinclair (141)
Flop: Whitfield (86)
Rookie Roulette: Phillipou (70), Caminiti (44), Fleeton (41), Cadman (37), Angwin (32)
St Kilda barely put GWS away and I think it says more about the Saints that the Giants. This was another game with a few hundreds and prolific pair Sinclair and Steele (121) starred. Green (111), Cogs (114), and RoMar (110) all did the right thing, but Jelly (97) could’ve done with an extra kick. The biggest flops though were Ash (64) and Whitfield (86) who were earmarked for big ones this week. The Saints famously love to give up +6s to defenders but neither of these blokes took advantage. There are several rookies ahead of him, but if you already have Wardlaw and McAndrew, you could bring in Fleeton.
Bring them in: Wardlaw, McAndrew, Hobbs, Smith
Cop it on the chin: Gawn, Anderson, Stewart
Put them in the bin: Pedlar, Johannisen, Ginbae
