The obvious pick for everyone to throw the VC is Errol Gulden early Saturday afternoon, who is the definition of the perfect VC option this week. But there’s some picks worthwhile of your consideration.
Gulden has a Round 3 round rolling average of 143.3, last two scores of 153 and 161 and is coming up against a North Melbourne side that leaks points. Errol is playing the perfect role with a mix of CBAs, whilst Sydney are looking to give him the ball on the outside like Collingwood do Nick Daicos… Form, tick. Role, tick. Ceiling, tick. Matchup, tick. There is no reason not to trust him with the VC this week if you own him.
Vice-Captains
If you don’t own Errol Gulden, my top 3 VC options in order are;
Tim English
English comes up against Adelaide, who Rowan Marshall had 116 against last week. English’s form has dropped a bit from where he was at earlier in the year, but he is still averaging 120 for the season and should be a great VC option.
Jordan Dawson
Dawson has scored 6 tons in a row since gaining a high CBA role, and comes up against the dogs who have allowed some decent scores to be posted against them this year, including a 170 by Tom Green 2 weeks ago, and a 123 by Sam Walsh last week.
Clayton Oliver
Clayton Oliver is my final VC option, for no other reason than the fact that he is also averaging 120 for the season, which has already included 5 scores of 124 or more, and not a single score under 100. However, he comes up against Port Adelaide this week, who are one of the toughest teams to score against, and held Clarry to his lowest score of the year last year, which was just 68 points.
Captains
If you miss with the VC this week, which I think is unlikely with the options we have, here are the people I would back in later on in the weekend.
Rowan Marshall
The last 2 games against the Giants, English has scored 151 and Mason Cox scored 128… Ridiculous numbers. Marshall has the joy of coming up against them this week, and with a 3 round rolling average of 119, which includes a score of 159, there is no reason not to think Marshall will be absolutely monstrous this week. 7 tons from 9 games, shown a ceiling, perfect match up, final game of the round. This will be big.
Tim Taranto
Low score of 108 for the season, 129 last week, 3 round rolling average of 124, coming up against a depleted Essendon midfield. Expect something around Taranto’s season average of 119, if not more this week. As safe an option as there could possibly be.
Zach Merrett
Last year against the Tigers, Merrett scored 105 and 125. The year before it was 112. Richmond allow plenty of fantasy points to be scored against them, and with no Parish or Setterfield, and with some rumours going around about Shiel not being quite right, the Bombers will be relying heavily on Merrett to have a massive week this week. His form hasn’t been the best with a couple of tough match ups lately, and having his roll thrown around a little, but I am backing Merrett in to bounce back in a big way this week, and over the next couple of weeks for that matter, and lift himself back up into that top tier of premium midfielders.
Josh Kelly
Rolling into Josh Kelly for the last game of the round this week is certainly a solid play. St Kilda have allowed 6 scores of 115+ in the last 3 weeks, including a 168 to Jack Ziebell. 4 tons in a row, 6 from 8 games this year, Kelly is a safe option for a 115+ this week, with the potential to score a lot more. Don’t forget this is a guy who has average 113 and 116 for a season before, with scores of 159 and 162 in his resume.
Lachie Whitfield
See above what I have written under Josh Kelly. I think Whitfield’s ceiling is even higher than Kelly’s this week, the only reason he sits below him is because of the pain he has caused us in the past… As mentioned above, Ziebell scored 168 against St Kilda playing in the backline. Brodie Smith also had 121 last week off half back. The week before it was Houston with 117. There is a massive trend of half backs scoring well above their averages against the Saints. We all know what Whit is capable of on his day. This could be ridiculous, and a massive POD option for you as captain. If I trusted him not to get knocked out or hurt in some other way, he would be sitting much higher on this list… Risk Vs reward!
