We’re on the eve of the AFL season so SuperCoaches are making those difficult calls to finalise their starting squads, especially after Elliot Yeo’s injury, so Honeyball called in the experts for some quick tips.
In the Honeyball SuperCoach digital magazine we compiled a panel of experts and asked them which players were locks, avoids/fades, breakouts, value picks and must-have rookies.
The panel consisted of;
- 2022 SuperCoach winner JP Haigh,
- 2021 SuperCoach winner Em Challis,
- 2022 SuperCoach 4th placer Abdul Yalcin,
- Five-time SuperCoach top 100 finisher Lachlan Hunter,
- 2022 SuperCoach 120th rank & 2020 SC 8th rank Todd Baird,
- 2022 SuperCoach 3rd placer Daniel Fleming.
Below is the excerpt from the panel’s answers on avoids/fades but for the full version including locks, value picks, breakouts & rooks, purchase the Honeyball SuperCoach magazine for only $9.95 via this link.
HB: Which high-owned players will you fade/leave out?
JP Haigh
Stephen Coniglio – I think he has a lot of soft tissue injuries and misses games. I think he’s priced where he should be at the moment. He might have a few points of upside but I don’t see a great deal. He consistently misses games. I don’t have him.
Em Challis
This guy has been in/out of my team all preseason but now I do believe I am fading Nick Daicos. I love watching him as a player, but we do have remember he is only in his second year. He will increase his ceiling, but I am not just if he can raise his floor enough. At his price he must be keeper and I want to see him in his new role, playing more midfield minutes. I also want to see him handle a tag because teams will target him. However, I do look forward to owning him in SC for many years to come.
Abdul Yalcin
I don’t like to leave many popular picks out. Oscar Allen or Ben King as key forwards. I don’t want Clayton Oliver, because he offers no value. He ruins my team structure too. I’ll get him in Round 6 when he plays Richmond, that’s the plan.
Lachlan Hunter
Nick Daicos – there’s a big chance he’ll be in my team by the end of the season but I’m happy to wait and see if he experiences any second-year blues or teams start putting more attention into him.
Todd Baird
Nat Fyfe is currently the seventh most picked SuperCoach forward (and rising). There is no doubt that his price is tempting but the facts suggest we are dreaming of the Fyfe of old. My belief has always been that if you are paying over $300k for a SuperCoach forward then you are wanting him to be in your team at year’s end and also a top eight forward for total points scores across the season. Fyfe over the last seven (yes, seven) seasons has averaged playing less than 14 games a season and as such misses more than one in every three games. If you think he will play 20+ games and average 95 points then pick him but with more time spent forward and the high risk of injury, it’s a no for me.
Daniel Fleming
Jack Sinclair – Jack’s season last year was incredible and jumping on him early is one of the main reasons I managed to finish third overall. However, this year I have some serious doubts. Jack is 28-years-old and last year was the first year he has ever averaged over 90 (previous highest was 86 in 2021). Was last year a once off? How will the change in coach and therefore game plan effect his role? I don’t think being priced at $626k and being the most expensive defender is someone you take a gamble on, this player should be a safe bet. Too many question marks for me. Pass.
