Reigning premiers Geelong have welcomed a host of new recruits, including Jack Bowes. It’s hard to change a premiership side, but Joel Selwood’s retirement leaves a void to fill.
Honeyball’s Stephen Riosa takes a look at how the Cats might line up for Round 1.
Defence
Nothing has changed for the back six that conceded just 67.64 points during the 2022 home & away season and 57.67 points during the finals. As per usual, Tom Stewart will lead Geelong’s intercept and counter-attack, something opposition teams may look to crack down on more this season.
Esava Ratugolea has had a strong preseason training in defence, so look for him to knock on the door for a spot in the backline. He’ll be an option to consider for cash generation if he can find his way into the senior side.

Midfield
Versatility has been the key to Geelong’s recent success, and Mark Blicavs is the epitome of that, able to play any role regardless of where he’s named. Expect him to ruck around the ground, play various shutdown roles and provide a contest up forward. An interesting point of difference to consider, but the fluid nature of Blicavs’ role makes him a risky selection.
Patrick Dangerfield isn’t relied upon as he once was, but expect him to still lead the Cats’ midfield brigade along with Cam Guthrie. Max Holmes is straight back into the 22 after missing last year’s grand final.

Forward
The forward line also picks up where it left off last season. However, there’s doubt surrounding Tom Hawkins, who underwent foot surgery in December. If he’s not ready for Round 1, new recruit Ollie Henry may be next in line, knocking on the door after a strong preseason.
Mitch Duncan is another versatile veteran who can play various roles regardless of his starting position, giving drive off half-back, providing run on the wing or even inside midfield if needed.

Bench
A mostly similar bench with mainstays from last season’s team. Joel Selwood’s retirement has left a spot up for grabs, with Geelong’s depth making it difficult to determine who locks it down.
Former Sun Jack Bowes gets the nod due to his ability to play multiple roles. He’s been training with the midfield group, but can also fill a role down back like he did with Gold Coast. The uncertainty around his job security makes him a risky selection.
Brandan Parfitt and Sam Menegola headline the Cats’ strong depth, and that spot could easily go to either of them. Jhye Clark, pick 8 in the 2022 AFL draft, is making a case for an early debut as well.
