With no games on Christmas Day, there’s no squads yet. Stay tuned for the Boxing Day double-header squads.
UPDATES
Ben McDermott ($135k WKP/BAT) missed the Hobart Hurricanes’ win over the Melbourne Renegades due to injury, but it seems it is only minor. McDermott told FoxCricket pre-game: “Just a slight hammy niggle last game. The support staff and I decided not to take the risk tonight for the longevity of the tournament.”
Matthew Wade ($152k BAT/WKP) missed the game after being suspended for one game after incurring three Level Code of Conduct breaches within 18 months. Tim Paine ($62k BAT/WKP) came into the Canes’ squad for Wade.
Perth Scorchers coach Adam Voges backed in struggling English opener Adam Lyth ($77k BAT). Voges said: “His record in the past 12-18 months has been phenomenal. I’ve no doubt that a performance isn’t too far away. He would liked to have contributed more but he’s a class player, that’s why we brought him in.”
Voges also indicated that Cameron Green ($62k BAT/BWL) and Lance Morris ($62k BWL), both out with Test squad duty, are firmly in his plans for when they’re available in mid-January. Voges said: “Both of them are actually going to play a really important for us in this tournament, at the back end, when the Test series is done.”
Josh Inglis ($142k WKP/BAT) said he wasn’t sure if he’d be elevated to open the batting when Lyth along with Faf du Plessis exit for other T20 leagues in early January. Inglis said: “I’m really not sure, we’ll probably have that conversation further down the track.”
Sam Billings ($154k WKP/BAT) revealed he had been unwell over the past fortnight, despite his match-winning knock on Friday. Billings said: “I’ve been under the weather for about two weeks. I’ve done about 4 Covid tests, all negative. I got bitten by a spider 10 days ago, it knocked me for six. I’m still really struggling, bit of a viral infection. I didn’t feel like myself tonight.”
Mark Steketee backed in opener Max Bryant ($82k BAT) who ended his form struggles with a handy 46 on Friday night, after calls for him to be dropped for Josh Brown ($42k BAT).
Steketee said: “He’d been batting beautifully leading into this tournament. People forget he’s only 23-years-old. To put a little performance like that together, I’m sure he’s disappointed he only got 40, but I think he took the right option tonight to that short boundary which is good to see.
“In previous years we’ve seen Maxy get caught on the big boundary, this year he got caught on the short boundary so it’s nice that he’s learning. If he keeps taking the right options, he’s got so much talent. So much upside for us.”
