Devil’s Advocate: Do you need more than three Brisbane Heat players on their Round 3 double?

As iconic ESPN analysis Stephen A. Smith once said, “wassup y’all ha ha ha. You know what time it is? It’s about to be that time!” Devil’s Advocate is back ahead of Round 3 and considering the lacklustre nature of the Brisbane Heat, the question must be asked, do we need more than three Heat players?

And it’s a very valid question, because we’ve around 4-5 players from teams playing twice in a round so far. But are the Heat playing well enough to justify having more than three players? Well, let’s have a look at the tiers of options that are present at the Heat.

Borderline Musts

Mark Steketee ($174k BWL)

He’s got a great role as their lead pacer, and their go-to guy for surge and death overs. Plenty of wickets in that role so he’s one to lock into your trades

Value options

Michael Neser ($107k BAT/BWL)

Definitely undervalued and a great player, he should be in your side if he’s cleared to play both games due to his potential commitments to Australia’s Test squad. One to monitor but hasn’t proved himself as a SuperCoach stud in the past.

Mitch Swepson ($107k BWL)

Another undervalued player who could be picked up. Heat play at Geelong, a more spin friendly wicket so that will benefit him. Tempting option but historically not brilliant for SuperCoach.

PODs

James Bazley ($156k BAT/BWL)

Been placed in a gun role and performing well, Bazley is an interesting prospect. Watch for final team lists to see where he lines up with the arrival of Neser but he should keep his current role.

Matt Renshaw ($134k BAT/BWL)

I really think he’s the Heat’s Matt Short. Easily bowl a couple of overs, bat in the top 3. Great role and one I’m a fan of.

Cheapies

Matt Kuhnemann ($88k BWL)

I’m a fan of his from way back, definitely good enough to be the lead spinner at quite a few clubs. But the Heat like pace, and it’ll be him against Bartlett for the final spot. Toss will be important.

Josh Brown ($42k BAT)

Another one who is in a selection battle, it’ll be him vs Bryant and the experience of Bryant may win out. Hopefully he wins out and is a cheap downgrade to get rid of our Thunder batting garbage.

So there you go, I’m a fan of Renshaw and Steketee, and hopeful that one of Kuhnemann/Brown plays, otherwise I’ll look at a Swepson/Neser type. I hope this helps you plan for next round and that you find away to bring in these Heat players as well as the legendary Paddy Dooley. Yes I own him.
