Role plays a big part in determining a player’s AFL Fantasy and SuperCoach scoring potential. In this weekly subscriber-only column, we reflect on the past round’s CBAs, kick-ins and TOG% for an insight.
Essendon v Gold Coast
CBAs (26): Zach Merrett’s (22) CBAs surged up to 85% for the game, compared to his 66% season average, scoring 131/136. Jake Stringer (3) spent less time in the middle.
The Suns midfield set-up was fairly standard although Matt Rowell (17) was down slightly on his norm for his 49/58, with David Swallow (15) attending more CBs than usual.
Kick-ins: Jordan Ridley (3/3) took three of Essendon’s seven kick-ins while Mason Redman (1/1) only had one despite his bumper score of 143/152. Jack Lukosius (7/6) returned from injury to lead Gold Coast’s kick-ins helping his score of 93/91, while Brandon Ellis (5/5) and Jack Bowes (5/3) had plenty.
TOG%: Ben Hobbs only played 65% due to a shoulder knock which was strapped up.

Melbourne v Port Adelaide
CBAs (26): Tom Sparrow (18) primarily absorbed the injured Clayton Oliver’s CBAs. Max Gawn (18) and Luke Jackson’s (8) CBA split with 69-31%.
Zak Butters only had four CBAs in his second game back from injury, with Robbie Gray (11) getting more mid time again.
Kick-ins: Steven May (6/5) took most of Melbourne’s kick-ins with Christian Salem relegated to none. Ryan Burton (3/3) and the returning Riley Bonner (3/3) led Port’s kick-ins.
TOG%: Max Gawn played 89% scoring 75/50 while Luke Jackson went at 74%, scoring 78/94.

Hawthorn v West Coast
CBAs (31): Tom Mitchell (11) was down on his usual CBAs, with Dylan Moore (19) way up again at around 60% for the second straight week. Josh Ward only attended six CBs despite his score of 133/99.
Jai Culley attended 14 CBs on his debut, roughly the same as the omitted Zane Trew had in the previous two. Culley scored 76/90.
Kick-ins: James Sicily (1/1) only had one of Hawthorn’s five kick-ins. Alex Witherden (3/2) returned to take some kick-ins but Shannon Hurn (7/7) had West Coast’s most.
TOG%: Young Eagles ruck Callum Jamieson only played 49% due to a pre-existing adductor issue which saw him subbed out very late.

Fremantle v Sydney
CBAs (22): Andy Brayshaw’s (15) CBAs were close to standard despite his below-par score of 78/96. Callum Mills’ (12) CBAs were slightly down on average again, going at 55% compared to his season average of 61%. Chad Warner (17) had his side’s most and is enjoying a good run lately.
Kick-ins: Luke Ryan (10/9) took most of Freo’s kick-ins while Jake Lloyd (6/5) and Nick Blakey (4/4) shared Sydney’s as normal. Lloyd scored 121/96.
TOG%: Nothing overly noteworthy with Will Brodie low as is the norm at 71%. Nat Fyfe played 82%.

Carlton v Geelong
CBAs (24): Nothing unusual from the Blues, while Mark Blicavs (20) had high CBAs for the second straight week.
Kick-ins: Nic Newman (5/4) and Sam Docherty (4/4) had Carlton’s most, while Mitch Duncan (5/4) continues to lead Geelong’s kick-ins in Tom Stewart’s absence.
TOG%: Patrick Dangerfield was way down at 62%, having risen up recently. He scored only 77/71.

North Melbourne v Richmond
CBAs (26): Despite a change of coach, North’s mid set-up was fairly unchanged, with Luke Davies-Uniacke (22) enjoying high CBAs for his score of 108/110. Jason Horne-Francis returned with only four CBAs.
Debutant Tyler Sonsie had 13 CBAs, while Trent Cotchin (21) returned squeezing out Jayden Short (four) to only CBAs, scoring 98/100.
Kick-ins: Aidan Corr (10/5) and Jaidyn Stephenson (9/9) took most of North’s kick-ins with Aaron Hall still out. Stephenson scored 90/104 but be wary of Hall’s return. Richmond shared around their kick-ins.
TOG%: Jed Anderson underwhelmed with 59/52 but he also only played 69%.

GWS Giants v Brisbane Lions
CBAs (26): GWS shared around their CBAs which was a change, with Jacob Hopper’s (10) return along with Josh Kelly (nine) having some issues. Tom Green (seven) was also squeezed out, down from a season average of 61% to 27%. Brisbane’s Rhys Mathieson (11) came into the mid rotation and scored well with 95/122.
Kick-ins: Harry Himmelberg (5/5) and Isaac Cumming (4/4) shared the duties for GWS. Keidean Coleman (3/2) took three of Brisbane’s five kick-ins in Daniel Rich’s absence.
TOG%: Josh Kelly actually played 73% despite a concussion which didn’t see him subbed off. Rhys Mathieson had Brisbane’s lowest TOG at 69% despite his score of 95/122. Keidean Coleman (70%) was next lowest for the Lions, after a week out due to H&S protocols, yet scored 102/119.

Adelaide v Collingwood
CBAs (31): With Matt Crouch and Jackson Hately, Sam Berry’s (27) CBAs went up more along with Harry Schoenberg (14), while Ben Keays’ (20) dipped slightly.
Patrick Lipinski (19) had more CBAs with Taylor Adams out, while Josh Carmichael had eight, possibly filling Jordan De Goey’s avoid, scoring an impressive 111/56.
Kick-ins: Jordan Dawson (5/5) took five of Adelaide’s seven kick-ins. Nick Daicos (4/4) took half of Collingwood’s kick-ins.
TOG%: Second-gamer Josh Carmichael played 61% TOG which is quite low.

Western Bulldogs v St Kilda
CBAs (23): Tim English (18) was only slightly below his average at 78% with Jordon Sweet’s (5) presence. Bailey Smith had 12s in his return which was around his average percentage. Marcus Bontempelli (12) dropped off most the mids but that didn’t seem to impact his scoring at all, posting 140/181. Adam Treloar didn’t have any CBAs for the second straight week.
With Seb Ross out, Zak Jones (15) had more CBAs while Rowan Marshall (15) did more ruck work with Paddy Ryder (7) going down injured.
Kick-ins: Bailey Dale (7/7) led the way for the Dogs but Treloar (5/4) got involved for the second straight week in Caleb Daniel’s absence, scoring 103/99. Jack Sinclair (3/3) took three of St Kilda’s six kick-ins.
TOG%: Rowan Marshall played 90% with fellow ruckman Paddy Ryder subbed out. Bailey Smith had relatively high TOG in his first game back, playing 84% although he tends to normally be higher.
