Role plays a big part in determining a player’s AFL Fantasy and SuperCoach scoring potential. In this weekly subscriber-only column, we reflect on the past round’s CBAs, kick-ins and TOG% for an insight.
Fremantle v Collingwood
CBAs (22): Things were fairly standard for Freo with Andy Brayshaw (16) and Will Brodie (16) having a good share.
Mason Cox’s (5) early injury meant Darcy Cameron (14) led the ruck. Jack Crisp (6) had his lowest CBAs of the season after being unwell in the week, yet scored 104/107.
Kick-ins: Luke Ryan (8/6) took all of Freo’s kick-ins. Nick Daicos (2/2) had two of Collingwood’s eight.
TOG%: Will Brodie (69%) was around his normal low mark. Caleb Serong (73%) wasn’t much higher yet scored 113/107. Crisp (74%) had low TOG along with CBAs after illness during the week.
Hawthorn v Brisbane Lions
CBAs (37): Tom Mitchell (18) returned after being managed and scored much better, returning 120/129, but he had marginally below 50% CBAs. Over the course of the season, Mitchell had had 55% CBAs per game, so there wasn’t the evident role change. Jai Newcombe (27), Connor Nash (26) and Jaeger O’Meara (21) all had more CBAs than Mitchell, plus ruckman Max Lynch (28).
Dayne Zorko (9) had 38% CBAs after his previous three games but was down at 24% in this game, leading to a score of 82/84.
Kick-ins: James Sicily (5/5) took half of the Hawks’ kick-ins. Daniel Rich (6/6) had most of Brisbane’s kick-ins but Keidean Coleman (2/1) continues to get a few, helping his score of 98/104.
TOG%: Sicily also had 100% TOG. Rookie Sam Butler (56%) was very low.

GWS Giants v West Coast
CBAs (37): With the change of coach there was a lot of interest in GWS’s setup. Stephen Coniglio (22) had 60%, having only attended 14% CBAs from Round 3 onwards. Harry Perryman (19) had his first CBAs for the season, although perhaps Lachie Ash and Tim Taranto’s absences were a factor. Tanner Bruhn (14) came into the side and had CBAs too. Callan Ward had no CBAs, dropping to a half-back role, which all suggests Coniglio’s new position is sustainable.
With the return of Luke Shuey (16) and Andrew Gaff (11), Greg Clark’s (5) CBAs dropped to 14% having been at 72% in Round 9.
Kick-ins: Isaac Cumming (4/4) shared the responsibility with reinvented defender Harry Himmelberg (4/3). Alex Witherden (4/4) split the duties with Jeremy McGovern (4/4) and Liam Duggan (3/2), with Witherden’s score dropping to 68/68.
TOG%: Hugh Dixon had no CBAs but he did have 87% TOG playing up forward. GWS debutant Jacob Wehr also had a healthy 87% TOG. Coniglio and Josh Kelly both had 86% TOG.
Richmond v Essendon
CBAs (22): Jayden Short is gradually being squeezed out of the midfield, having only nine CBAs, meaning over the past three weeks he’s had 41%, 43% and 50% CBAs. Dustin Martin (9) is continuing around the 40% mark, scoring 68/78.
Zach Merrett (8) has had low CBAs over the past two games, down at 31%. He had been around 72% previously, so monitor that role change. Andy McGrath (17) has gone up over the past two games.
Kick-ins: Nick Vlastuin (5/4) took all bar one for Richmond. With Jordan Ridley out for the Dons, Mason Redman (5/4) and Nick Hind (5/3) took the most.
TOG%: Nic Martin had 95% despite his low return of 65/49.

Adelaide v St Kilda
CBAs (26): Nothing new from the Crows, with Ben Keays (22) still getting plenty of mid time despite managing only 88/96.
With Jack Steele out injured, Zak Jones (22) had the increase in CBAs in his third game back. Jack Sinclair didn’t get any CBAs, while Marcus Windhager (5) had a few.
Kick-ins: Jordan Dawson (1/1) only had one kick-in having had none in Round 9, yet scored 111/130 off the wing. He had previously been a regular kick-in taker. Sinclair (6/6) had the Saints’ most.
TOG%: Dawson had an outstanding 93% for his role. Jake Soligo (87%) was high for a rookie too.
North Melbourne v Melbourne
CBAs (26): Tristan Xerri had 15 CBAs on his return to the side, with Todd Goldstein (11) shuffled to back-up ruck. Jason Horne-Francis only had seven CBAs (27%) on his return from hamstring tightness.
Max Gawn (14) had 54% of the CBAs, with Luke Jackson (12) having a small rise. Over the course of the season, Gawn had averaged 66% per game.
Kick-ins: Luke McDonald (11/9) had none in Round 9 but led the way in this game. Steven May (3/3) wasn’t exclusive with kick-ins for once, with Jake Lever and Jayden Hunt getting one each.
TOG%: May did have 100% TOG. Christian Petracca was very high with 91%, while Clayton Oliver had 86% for his bumper score of 151/178. Xerri only had 63% upon his return.

Western Bulldogs v Gold Coast
CBAs (30): The Dogs midfield set-up was fairly standard, although Josh Dunkley’s (13) Round 9 drop-off (24%) was quickly corrected up to 43%. Despite talk of more forward time, Marcus Bontempelli (15) attended 50% CBAs. Bailey Smith did the same, with both set for forward status upon the next DPP changes.
Matt Rowell only had 18 of 30 CBAs, not helping a poor score of 36/39. Rowell typically has around 80% CBAs per game, so his 60% on Saturday was well down on the norm. David Swallow (15) picked up a few of Rowell’s CBAs, having now had 24 in the past two games which is a big rise.
Kick-ins: Bailey Dale (7/7) and Caleb Daniel (2/2) had the Dogs’ kick-ins as per usual. Wil Powell (6/3) and Jy Farrar (6/3) had the most for the Suns, although the latter went off concussed.
TOG%: Rowell’s lower CBAs combined with only 67% TOG didn’t help his score. Malcolm Rosas only scored 27/51 from 57% TOG.
Geelong v Port Adelaide
CBAs (21): With Rhys Stanley a late out, Mark Blicavs (19) was used as lead ruck, scoring 98/101. Sam De Koning (2) pinch hit in the ruck too. Mitch Duncan had no CBAs and scored 76/82.
Ollie Wines attended 18 of 21 centre bounces, while Zak Butters (10) and Connor Rozee (8) had their normal amount.
Kick-ins: The Cats shared around the kick-in duties, while Ryan Burton (9/8) had clearly the most for Port, with Dan Houston (3/2) having a few to help score of 121/139.
TOG%: De Koning had 100% TOG. Late inclusion Cooper Stephens had low TOG at 64%.

Carlton v Sydney
CBAs (31): Sam Walsh (12) was low among the Blues mids led by Patrick Cripps (27) and George Hewett (24). Luke Parker (24) led the way for the Swans, with Isaac Heeney (15) spiking up to nearly 50%, having only had two CBAs across the previous two games. Despite that, Heeney scored 77/94.
Kick-ins: With Zac Williams out injured, Sam Docherty (6/6) had the most for Carlton.
TOG%: Despite his low CBAs, Walsh had 92% TOG which was the most of any midfielder. Parker was at 91% for Sydney. Cripps was at 84% which isn’t a reason for his dip in scores, down at 71/78.
Sydney’s ruck split squeezed Peter Ladhams down to 56%, while Tom Hickey at 66% which doesn’t feel sustainable.
