Role plays a big part in determining a player’s AFL Fantasy and SuperCoach scoring potential. In this weekly subscriber-only column, we reflect on the past round’s CBAs, kick-ins and TOG% for an insight.
Carlton v Adelaide
CBAs (30): Youngster Jack Carroll‘s CBAs rose from two to seven in the only notable change for the Blues, who were without George Hewett again.
With Matt Crouch out of the Adelaide side, Jackson Hately‘s (24) numbers rose. Harry Schoenberg took a few off Rory Laird who was unwell.
Kick-Ins: Zac Williams (2/2) and Sam Docherty (2/2) led the way for Carlton. Billy Frampton (4/4) took Adelaide’s most which was unusual, with Mitch Hinge (3/3) and Jordan Dawson (3/2) up there too in Brodie Smith’s absence.
TOG%: Blues pair Carroll (66%) and Corey Durdin (69%) had standard numbers for youngsters. Laird was down at 75%.

Melbourne v St Kilda
CBAs (26): Max Gawn‘s CBAs dropped from 71% down to 54% with Luke Jackson back in the side, while he was carrying an injury too.
Paddy Ryder (19) took the bulk of the Saints’ CBAs with Rowan Marshall (7) playing forward. After few rounds of zero CBAs, Jack Sinclair (10) returned to the middle, while Zak Jones (9) came into the side and got a few.
Kick-Ins: Steven May (5/4) bossed the kick-ins as per usual. There were no kick-ins for Sinclair, given his midfield time.
TOG%: Gawn was at 83% despite the injury talk and Jackson’s return. Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (56%) had low TOG, while Marshall (61%) was also down on his return from injury.
Brisbane Lions v West Coast
CBAs (24): Hugh McCluggage‘s (9) numbers dropped significantly from 78% down to 37%, but it was arguably positive for his scoring which soared at 141/154. Dayne Zorko had 11 CBAs for the second straight week, having previously had very little midfield time, scoring 132/123.
West Coast’s midfield mix is constantly in flux given their issues but second-game ruck Callum Jamieson (15) may be one to monitor, with 73/72, having been played down back on his debut in round two.
Kick-Ins: Ryan Lester came into the Brisbane side and took three of their six kick-ins which impacted Daniel Rich (2/2) who normally takes most, yet still scored 107/117. Shannon Hurn (8/8) took all but one for West Coast.
TOG%: Zorko (82%) had high numbers given his midfield role, so that’s another tick for him.

Essendon v Hawthorn
CBAs (31): Ben Hobbs (4) got involved more in the final term, with a season-high score of 95/93.
Josh Ward had 12 CBAs on his return to the side after being rested, while Tom Mitchell‘s (16) share didn’t really change, despite a shocker score of 51/40.
Kick-Ins: With Jordan Ridley out due to illness, Tom Cutler (6/5) and Mason Redman (5/5) took the lead. James Sicily (4/4) and Will Day (4/2) had the most for Hawthorn.
TOG%: Nic Martin (94%) had the fourth highest TOG of any player, which is remarkable for a midfielder. Hobbs (73%) had good TOG. For Hawthorn, rookies Connor Macdonald (68%) and Jackson Callow (70%) were low while Josh Ward (75%) was up after a week off rested.
GWS Giants v Geelong
CBAs (20): Stephen Coniglio‘s CBAs were still low but rose from one to four. Coniglio has had 17 CBAs across the past six rounds, which is less than three per game. Josh Kelly‘s share was down, attending only six, while Lachie Whitfield (3) had his first CBAs for the season.
Patrick Dangerfield (16) returned from two games out and had 80% of CBAs, absorbing some of the absent Joel Selwood and Max Holmes‘ share. After 29 CBAs in two games, Mitch Duncan had none, yet scored 124/116.
Kick-Ins: Duncan (2/1), however, did have his first kick-ins of the season, which are typically owned by Tom Stewart (3/1) and Zach Tuohy (3/2). Isaac Cumming had the most for GWS (10/8).
TOG%: Cooper Hamilton (90%) had very high TOG for a rookie. Geelong debutants Cooper Stephens (67%) and medi-sub Mitch Knevitt (51%) were much lower albeit in different roles. Knevitt came on for Jed Bews (15%). Dangerfield (69%) was down a bit in his first game back.

Sydney v Gold Coast
CBAs (22): Isaac Heeney‘s CBAs dropped from 11 to one, with his score dipping to 67/75. With Noah Anderson out, Brayden Fiorini (7) had more CBAs but otherwise it was fairly standard for the Suns.
Kick-Ins: Jake Lloyd (9/9) and Nick Blakey (6/6) took all of Sydney’s kick-ins. Wil Powell (5/2) returned from injury to lead the Suns’ kick-ins.
TOG%: Heeney still had high TOG at 90%, while Luke Parker (78%) was down a bit after a rolled ankle, scoring 84/89. Suns rookie Malcolm Rosas (56%) was very low for a small forward.
Richmond v Collingwood
CBAs (30): Jayden Short (15) had 62% CBAs last round upon his midfield switch and he had 50% this round, with Trent Cotchin (20) back in the side, along with Dustin Martin (8) who will likely need some time to re-build his fitness before he stays in the middle.
The Pies numbers were fairly normal, although Scott Pendlebury (0) didn’t have any CBAs. The ruck split was intriguing with Darcy Cameron (18) having 60% alongside Aiden Begg (12) which was slightly up on last week as they adjust to life without Brodie Grundy.
Kick-Ins: With Short in the middle and Nick Vlastuin out unwell, Nathan Broad (5/4) led the way alongside Daniel Rioli (3/3). Darcy Moore (5/5) took the most for the Pies.
TOG%: Begg (61%) was fairly low for a ruckman given they’re not resting him as much forward which may be unsustainable, while Maurice Rioli (73%) was low for a small forward.

Fremantle v North Melbourne
CBAs (20): With Rory Lobb and Lloyd Meek out, Sean Darcy attended 19 of the 20 CBAs, scoring 125/178. There was nothing out of the norm for North.
Kick-Ins: Luke Ryan (3/2) led the way for Freo. Luke McDonald (4/4) had North’s most, while Jaidyn Stephenson (3/2) helped out with a few kick-ins, with the Roos figuring out their best mix without Aaron Hall and Jack Ziebell.
TOG%: Will Brodie (67%) continues to have look time on ground yet scores well, posting 104/115. Darcy (82%) had more influence too.
Port Adelaide v Western Bulldogs
CBAs (25): Connor Rozee continues to get plenty of midtime with 16 CBAs, while Zak Butters scored poorly (63/52) despite having 11 CBAs.
In the absence of Marcus Bontempelli, Adam Treloar‘s CBAs rose from nine of 30 in Round 7 up to 16 of 25. Josh Dunkley‘s CBAs also rose from seven to 12 but that didn’t translate to a big score, posting 62/78.
Kick-Ins: Ryan Burton and Riley Bonner took most of Port’s kick-in although Dan Houston (2/1) helped out. Houston may get more moving forward with Bonner going off injured in the second half. Bailey Dale (10/10) and Caleb Daniel (4/4) were in charge for the Dogs as per usual.
TOG%: Bailey Smith (97%) had incredible time on ground for a midfielder, with a decent score of 100/98. Robbie McComb (81%) had high TOG for a first-year player although he is mature-age and there were a few injuries.
